Description
Lacourte Godbillon Champagne 1er Cru Extra Brut Millésime 2019 is a finely etched, grower Champagne that captures the character of a single, expressive vintage. Crafted from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay sourced from premier cru vineyards in the Montagne de Reims, it offers depth, precision and a distinctly terroir-driven style. With low dosage and meticulous vineyard work, this Extra Brut cuvée showcases both the purity of the fruit and the singular personality of 2019 in Champagne.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Champagne shows a bright, luminous straw-gold color with delicate, persistent bubbles that form a fine and elegant mousse. On the nose, it opens with vibrant notes of ripe orchard fruits—pear, yellow apple and white peach—layered with citrus zest, crushed chalk, and hints of brioche, hazelnut and white flowers. Subtle undertones of spice and fresh pastry emerge with a bit of air, adding complexity without heaviness.
The palate is precise and energetic, driven by Pinot Noir’s structure and Chardonnay’s tension. Expect a dry, mineral spine framed by flavors of lemon curd, green and golden apple, stone fruit, and a touch of grapefruit pith, all wrapped in a creamy yet taut texture. The Extra Brut dosage keeps everything lifted and refreshing, while the finish is long, saline and mouthwatering, with lingering chalk, citrus and a gentle nuttiness. Enjoyable now for its vibrancy, this 2019 vintage has the concentration and acidity to develop beautifully over the next 5–8 years, gaining more complexity, toast and nuttier nuances with cellaring.
Production
Lacourte Godbillon farms premier cru parcels in the Montagne de Reims, primarily around Écueil, where chalk and limestone-rich soils with clay topsoils provide excellent drainage and drive the wine’s tension and minerality. The Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to ensure careful selection and intact fruit from vineyard to press. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and vinified with a focus on preserving purity—typically using temperature-controlled fermentation, a mix of stainless steel and, for some components, oak to add texture and complexity. The base wines are aged on their lees before secondary fermentation in bottle, followed by an extended period of aging sur lie to build fine bubbles and depth. The Extra Brut dosage is kept low to highlight the character of the 2019 vintage and the 1er Cru terroir rather than sweetness.
Food & Serving
This 1er Cru Extra Brut is a versatile food Champagne, ideal with refined yet flavorful dishes. It pairs beautifully with oysters, scallops, sashimi, tartares and other raw or lightly cured seafood, as well as lobster, crab or prawn dishes with citrus or herbal accents. It also shines alongside poultry with light cream sauces, roast chicken, veal carpaccio, sushi, tempura and fine charcuterie, as well as cheeses like Comté, aged Gouda, or a young, creamy Brie. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) in a white wine or tulip-shaped glass to accentuate the aromatics and texture. A brief 10–15 minutes of opening in the glass, or a very short and gentle decanting if serving from magnum, can help the wine fully express its complexity.
Producer
Lacourte Godbillon is a respected grower-producer based in Écueil, a premier cru village in the Montagne de Reims, Champagne, France. Family-run for several generations, the estate is known for its commitment to sustainable, increasingly organic viticulture and its focus on expressing the distinct personality of its terroir through estate-grown fruit. Working mainly with Pinot Noir complemented by Chardonnay, Lacourte Godbillon has earned a strong reputation among Champagne enthusiasts for precise, characterful wines that balance intensity with finesse.
