Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Garretti shows a vibrant, medium-deep garnet core with youthful ruby reflections at the rim. The nose is pure and detailed, opening with dark cherry, wild strawberry and rose petals, followed by notes of violet, licorice, blood orange, cedar, and a hint of sweet tobacco and spice. On the palate, this is refined yet taut, with silky but assertive tannins wrapped around flavors of red cherry, plum skin, pomegranate, dried roses and subtle tar and balsamic undertones. The acidity is bright and linear, giving the wine lift and precision, while the finish is long, savory and mineral-driven, suggesting excellent aging capacity. Production
The Garretti vineyard lies in the hills of Grinzane Cavour in Piemonte, on predominantly calcareous-clay soils with a significant presence of sand and marl that bring both structure and aromatic finesse to Nebbiolo. The vines are farmed with a strong emphasis on low yields and careful vineyard work, with grapes harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to ensure perfect berry selection. In the cellar, La Spinetta follows a modern-leaning but terroir-focused approach: gentle crushing, followed by temperature-controlled fermentation and extended maceration to extract fine tannins and aromatic depth, and aging in mostly French oak (a proportion of new barriques and used wood) before a further period of bottle refinement prior to release.
