Description
La Spinetta Barbaresco Valeirano Vursu 2020 is a powerful, finely etched expression of Nebbiolo from one of Barbaresco’s most dramatic crus. Perched on steep, mineral-rich slopes, Valeirano delivers a Barbaresco that is at once intense, structured and exquisitely detailed. This single-vineyard bottling from La Spinetta’s acclaimed Vursu range has helped redefine what Barbaresco can be: profoundly age-worthy, yet already captivating in its youth.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Valeirano shows a deep, luminous garnet with a classic Nebbiolo transparency at the rim. The nose is complex and layered: wild raspberry and dark cherry meet notes of rose petal, violet, blood orange zest, and dried herbs, supported by hints of licorice, tobacco leaf, tar, and crushed stone. With air, more savory nuances emerge—cedar, graphite, and a subtle, earthy truffle edge.
On the palate, this is a vertical, tightly coiled Barbaresco, marked by precision and tension. Fine yet assertive tannins frame flavors of red and black cherry, pomegranate, and cranberry, backed by notes of anise, black tea, and savory spice. The acidity is vibrant and mouthwatering, giving the wine lift and length while the mineral backbone from the calcareous soils adds a tactile, almost salty definition to the finish. Still youthful and primary, the 2020 Valeirano has considerable aging potential—expect it to unfurl beautifully over 10–20 years, gaining more complexity, silkier tannins, and tertiary notes of dried flowers, leather, and forest floor.
Production
The Valeirano vineyard lies in the Treiso area of Barbaresco, at higher altitude with steep, well-drained slopes dominated by limestone and marl—conditions that naturally favor Nebbiolo’s elegance and structure. La Spinetta farms these vines with meticulous attention, focusing on low yields and careful canopy management to ensure perfect ripeness while preserving freshness. Grapes are harvested by hand, with strict selection both in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled tanks with extended maceration on the skins to extract fine tannins and aromatic complexity. The wine is then aged in French oak (predominantly used barriques) before a period of bottle rest, allowing the powerful structure of Valeirano to integrate while maintaining its energy and purity of fruit.
Food & Serving
La Spinetta Barbaresco Valeirano Vursu 2020 is a superb partner for richly flavored Piedmontese and northern Italian dishes: braised beef or veal (such as brasato al Barolo), game birds, lamb shank, porcini risotto, and dishes featuring white truffle or aged cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Castelmagno. It also shines alongside roasted root vegetables, wild mushroom preparations, and hearty, herb-infused stews. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo stems to showcase the aromatics. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth is strongly recommended to soften the tannins and allow the wine’s floral, mineral and spice notes to fully express themselves.
Producer
Founded in the late 1970s by the Rivetti family, La Spinetta has grown from a small Moscato producer into one of Piemonte’s most respected and influential modern wineries. Based in Castagnole delle Lanze and later expanding into Barbaresco and Barolo, the estate was among the pioneers of single-vineyard expressions of Nebbiolo, with the Vursu range—Gallina, Starderi and Valeirano—showcasing distinct cru identities. La Spinetta is known for its meticulous vineyard work, low yields, and a style that marries richness and concentration with precision and terroir transparency. Highly rated by international critics and widely collected, La Spinetta has played a key role in elevating Barbaresco’s global reputation, with Valeirano consistently recognized as one of the appellation’s most structured and age-worthy crus.
