Description

La Spinetta Barbaresco Valeirano 2006 is a powerful, ageworthy expression of Nebbiolo from one of Barbaresco’s most dramatic crus. Sourced from steep, limestone-rich vineyards in Treiso, this wine captures the depth, structure and perfume that made 2006 such a highly regarded vintage in Piemonte. It’s a serious Barbaresco for collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate intensity, elegance and long-term cellaring potential. The Valeirano cru is known for producing some of La Spinetta’s most refined and mineral-driven wines, distinguished by their tension, precision and aromatic lift. Crafted from low-yielding vines and handled with meticulous care in the cellar, this 2006 bottling reflects both the strength of the year and the estate’s modern yet terroir-focused approach. Barbaresco has been recognized as one of Italy’s great wines since the 19th century, and La Spinetta’s Valeirano has become a benchmark for the appellation’s more vertical, structured style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2006 Valeirano shows a deep garnet core with brick-orange reflections forming at the rim, a classic evolution for high-quality Nebbiolo. The color remains vibrant, hinting at both maturity and remaining freshness. The nose is complex and layered, with aromas of dried red cherries, macerated strawberries and wild raspberries intertwined with notes of rose petals, violet, and a touch of dried herbs. Secondary and tertiary nuances emerge with age: leather, tobacco leaf, truffle, cedar, and hints of tar and sweet spices like anise and cinnamon. There is a distinct mineral streak, recalling crushed stones and chalk, that is characteristic of Valeirano’s soils. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet finely etched, with firm, polished tannins and a lively acidity that gives it structure and lift. Flavors of sour cherry, red currant and blood orange are layered with savory notes of licorice, underbrush, tobacco and a subtle balsamic edge. The finish is long, dry and mouth-coating, with lingering notes of spice, rose and mineral. At this stage, the 2006 is in its prime drinking window, showing beautifully resolved structure, but it still has the backbone to continue evolving gracefully for several more years, depending on storage conditions.

Production
The Barbaresco Valeirano 2006 is sourced from La Spinetta’s vineyards in the Valeirano cru in Treiso, one of the higher and cooler sites in Barbaresco. The steep slopes and calcareous marl soils rich in limestone and sand give the wine its tension, aromatic lift and distinctive mineral character. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with strict selection in the vineyard and again in the cellar to ensure only the best Nebbiolo clusters are used. In line with La Spinetta’s philosophy, the wine is vinified in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks with careful maceration to extract color, tannin and aroma without harshness. Fermentation is followed by an extended period of aging in French oak (often a significant portion in barrique), which adds structure and subtle spice while allowing the Nebbiolo character to remain at the forefront. After barrel aging, the wine is rested further in bottle before release, ensuring that its tannins begin to integrate and its complex bouquet starts to unfold.

Food & Serving
This 2006 Barbaresco Valeirano pairs superbly with rich, savory dishes that can stand up to Nebbiolo’s firm tannins and acidity. Think classic Piemontese fare such as braised beef (brasato al Barolo), veal shank, roasted lamb, game birds, and dishes with truffles or wild mushrooms. Aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano, Grana Padano and well-matured Pecorino are also excellent matches, as are risottos with porcini or truffle. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight the wine’s aromatics and balance. Given its age and structure, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open fully and shed any remaining tightness. In its current mature phase, a gentle decant is ideal—just enough to aerate without overly exposing it for too long before serving.

Producer
La Spinetta, founded by the Rivetti family in the 1970s, began its rise to prominence with Moscato d’Asti before gaining international acclaim for its ambitious, terroir-driven Barbaresco and Barolo. Based in Piemonte, the estate is known for its distinctive rhinoceros label and a modern, detail-oriented approach that still respects traditional Piedmontese character. Over the years, La Spinetta has become one of the key names in the region, helping to elevate Barbaresco’s profile on the global stage. The Valeirano bottling is part of La Spinetta’s flagship single-vineyard range, showcasing the nuances of top crus through meticulous vineyard work and carefully managed oak. Consistently well reviewed by international critics, these wines have cemented La Spinetta’s reputation as a leader in premium Nebbiolo, recognized for their combination of power, polish and clear sense of place.
