Description

La Spinetta Barbaresco Starderi Vursù 2020 is a powerful, single-vineyard Nebbiolo that captures the depth and elegance of top-tier Barbaresco. Sourced from the renowned Starderi cru, this wine is crafted for those who appreciate both intensity and refinement in their reds. Its combination of structure, aromatics, and precision makes it a standout choice for the cellar or a special dinner.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Starderi Vursù shows a vibrant, deep garnet hue with brick-red reflections typical of high-quality Nebbiolo. The nose is layered and expressive, offering wild cherries, ripe red berries, violets, and rose petals, intertwined with notes of licorice, sweet spices, tobacco leaf, and a subtle hint of tar and cedar. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet finely etched, with firm, chalky tannins and a lively acidity that gives the wine real drive and precision. Flavors of red cherry, raspberry, and pomegranate unfold into darker tones of plum, leather, and dried herbs, supported by well-integrated oak and a long, savory finish. This is a Barbaresco built for aging: while already accessible with sufficient air, it will gain complexity and harmony over 10–20 years in a good cellar.

Production
The Starderi vineyard sits in Neive in the Barbaresco appellation of Piemonte, where calcareous-clay soils and excellent south/southwest exposure give Nebbiolo both concentration and aromatic lift. La Spinetta is known for meticulous vineyard work: yields are kept low, grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, and strict selection ensures only the best clusters make it into the winery. Vinification typically involves temperature-controlled fermentation with skin contact to extract color, tannin, and aroma, followed by aging in French oak barriques to refine the structure and build complexity, all while preserving the distinct character of the Starderi cru.

Food & Serving
This Barbaresco is an outstanding partner for rich, savory dishes such as braised beef, ossobuco, lamb shank, game birds, truffle risotto, mushroom-based dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and balance. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth is recommended to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to fully open; older bottles will need a gentler, shorter decant primarily to separate sediment.

Producer
La Spinetta, founded by the Rivetti family in the 1970s, has grown from a small family estate into one of Piemonte’s most respected and distinctive producers. Initially gaining fame for intense, characterful Moscato d’Asti, La Spinetta later became a benchmark for modern, vineyard-focused Barbaresco and Barolo. Their Vursù series, including the Starderi cru, showcases single-vineyard expressions that highlight the nuances of Piemonte’s finest sites. Known for rigorous vineyard management, low yields, and a precise, polished style, La Spinetta has earned critical acclaim and a strong international following, helping to elevate Barbaresco’s global reputation.
