Description

La Spinetta Barbaresco Gallina Vursu 2006 is a benchmark single-vineyard Barbaresco that captures the elegance and power of Nebbiolo from one of Piemonte’s most coveted crus. From an excellent vintage, this wine combines depth, aromatic complexity, and impeccable structure, making it ideal for both collectors and serious enthusiasts. Sourced from the famed Gallina vineyard, it showcases La Spinetta’s signature modern precision while remaining true to Barbaresco’s classical soul.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2006 Gallina Barbaresco shows a deep garnet core with brick-orange reflections at the rim, a clear sign of graceful evolution. The nose is intense and layered, with aromas of dried rose petals, cherry liqueur, wild strawberries, and plum compote, supported by notes of tar, tobacco leaf, licorice, and sweet spices, along with subtle hints of leather and underbrush that emerge with air. On the palate, this wine is full-bodied yet finely etched, with firmly integrated tannins that have softened beautifully over time. Flavors of macerated red cherries, dried raspberries, and blood orange mingle with savory accents of truffle, balsamic, cedar, and crushed herbs. The acidity is vibrant and lifting, giving precision and length to a long, savory finish. Now approaching peak maturity, the 2006 still has the structure to evolve further for several more years, offering optimal drinking now through the end of the decade if well cellared.

Production
La Spinetta’s Gallina Barbaresco comes from the Gallina cru in Neive, a gently rolling hillside with calcareous clay and sandy marl soils that give Nebbiolo both perfume and depth. The vines, planted at relatively low yields, are hand-harvested to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters are selected. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks, followed by aging in French oak barrels (a portion of which are new), which polishes the tannins and adds subtle spice without overwhelming the fruit. After barrel maturation, the wine is given additional bottle aging before release, allowing the complex aromatics and structure to knit together.

Food & Serving
This Barbaresco is a superb match for rich, savory dishes such as braised beef, veal shank (ossobuco), lamb shoulder, game birds, and truffle-infused recipes. Classic Piemontese pairings include tajarin with white truffle, wild mushroom risotto, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano or mature Pecorino. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the mature aromatics to fully open and the remaining tannins to soften, especially if enjoyed on the younger side of its drinking window.

Producer
La Spinetta, founded by the Rivetti family in the late 1970s, began as a Moscato specialist before quickly gaining acclaim for its ambitious, terroir-driven red wines. Based in Piemonte and now a reference name in the region, La Spinetta helped usher in a more modern, polished style of Barbaresco and Barolo while maintaining a strong respect for site expression. The Vursu line of single-vineyard Barbarescos, including Gallina, has earned consistently high scores from international critics and cemented La Spinetta’s reputation as one of the leading producers in the appellation, known for wines that marry power, elegance, and ageworthiness.
