Description
La Mouline 2004 from E. Guigal is one of Côte-Rôtie’s most celebrated wines, blending the power of Syrah with the perfume and finesse of a touch of Viognier. From one of the Rhône Valley’s most iconic producers, it represents a benchmark expression of the appellation and a wine with serious collector appeal.
Tasting Notes
Expect a deep, mature garnet color with a refined, evolved edge. The nose is typically layered and complex, showing black fruits, violets, smoked meat, spice, and subtle earthy tones, with the Viognier adding lift and floral brightness.
On the palate, La Mouline is known for its silky texture, concentrated dark berry fruit, peppery spice, and remarkable balance between richness and elegance. The 2004 vintage is likely at a beautiful stage of evolution now, offering developed complexity while still retaining enough structure for further short-to-medium-term aging.
Production
La Mouline comes from a highly prized Côte-Rôtie vineyard site in the northern Rhône, where steep, schist-rich slopes and a cool continental influence help shape wines of intensity and precision. The small addition of Viognier is co-fermented with Syrah, a traditional practice in Côte-Rôtie that enhances aromatics and texture. E. Guigal is known for meticulous vineyard work and careful cellar vinification, producing wines with depth, purity, and long aging potential.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with game birds, roast duck, lamb, venison, grilled beef, or richly flavored mushroom dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if the bottle is still showing youthful structure, though an older vintage may only need a gentle decant to remove sediment.
Producer
E. Guigal is one of the Rhône Valley’s most respected producers, founded in 1946 and based in Ampuis, the heart of Côte-Rôtie. The estate is renowned for its exceptional single-vineyard wines, particularly La Mouline, La Landonne, and La Turque, which have helped define the modern reputation of the appellation and established Guigal as a benchmark name in fine Rhône winemaking.
