Description
La Mouline 1994 from E. Guigal is one of the great single-vineyard wines of Côte-Rôtie, admired for its depth, finesse, and unmistakable sense of place. As part of Guigal’s famed LaLa wines, it represents one of the Northern Rhône’s most celebrated expressions of Syrah, often with a small amount of Viognier adding fragrance and lift.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a mature garnet to brick-tinged hue, reflecting its age while retaining impressive concentration. The nose is layered and complex, unfolding with blackcurrant, dried blackberry, violet, smoked meat, olive tapenade, leather, and sweet spice, with the Rhône’s signature floral nuance woven through the savory tones.
The palate is refined yet powerful, with silky tannins, well-integrated acidity, and a long, nuanced finish marked by dark fruit, pepper, earth, and mineral intensity. In a strong vintage and well-stored bottle, it can continue to offer pleasure for years, though its peak drinking window is likely now or in the near term as tertiary complexity comes forward.
Production
La Mouline comes from one of the steep, terraced slopes of Côte-Rôtie, where schist and granite soils help produce wines of great aromatic complexity and structure. Grapes are typically harvested by hand due to the extreme terrain, and vinification follows traditional methods designed to preserve purity, with careful extraction and élevage in new oak, which is a hallmark of Guigal’s top wines.
Food & Serving
This wine is a superb match for roasted lamb, duck breast, venison, grilled game birds, or dishes with mushrooms and truffle. Serve it at around 16–18°C and consider decanting for about 1–2 hours if the bottle is showing youthful structure, though an older vintage like 1994 should be handled gently and tasted as it opens.
Producer
E. Guigal is one of the most respected producers in the Rhône Valley, founded by Étienne Guigal in 1946 and later propelled to international acclaim by Marcel and Philippe Guigal. The estate is especially renowned for its exceptional Côte-Rôtie single-vineyard wines—La Mouline, La Landonne, and La Turque—which have become benchmarks for the region and among the most collectible wines in France.
