Description

La Morandina Barbaresco Bricco Spessa 2001 is a mature, classically styled Nebbiolo from the hills of Piemonte, Italy. Crafted from carefully selected grapes in one of the region’s standout vintages, it offers the kind of nuance and aromatic complexity that only time in bottle can deliver. This single-vineyard Barbaresco reflects the traditional elegance of the appellation, with a focus on purity, structure, and terroir expression.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2001 Barbaresco shows a garnet core with brick-orange hues at the rim, a hallmark of well-aged Nebbiolo. The nose is complex and developed, with aromas of dried cherries, rose petals, violets, forest floor, leather, and a gentle balsamic note, supported by hints of tobacco, spice, and dried herbs. On the palate, the wine is medium- to full-bodied with refined, integrated tannins and vibrant yet mellowed acidity that keeps the wine lively despite its age. Flavors of dried red berries, blood orange, tea leaves, truffle, and sweet spices unfold in layers, leading to a long, savory finish with notes of leather and undergrowth. At this stage, the wine is fully mature and drinking at or near its peak; while it may hold a bit longer under ideal cellaring conditions, it is best enjoyed now to capture its tertiary complexity.

Production
Bricco Spessa is sourced from hillside vineyards in Piemonte, where Nebbiolo thrives on calcareous marl and clay-limestone soils that promote both structure and aromatic finesse. The grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of bunches, especially important in a structured, ageworthy style like Barbaresco. Vinification traditionally involves a long maceration on the skins to extract color, tannin, and aromatics, followed by extended maturation in oak – often large casks – and additional bottle aging before release, allowing the wine’s firm Nebbiolo tannins to soften and its complex bouquet to develop.

Food & Serving
This mature Barbaresco is a superb partner for classic Piedmontese cuisine, such as tajarin pasta with truffle, brasato al Barolo-style braised meats, veal shank, or game birds. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano, Grana Padano, and mature pecorino, as well as mushroom-based dishes and risotto. Serve at 18–20°C (64–68°F). Given its age, decant gently for about 30–60 minutes to separate any sediment and allow the aromas to fully open, taking care not to over-aerate.

Producer
La Morandina is a Piedmontese producer known for working with traditional regional varieties and expressing the character of its hillside vineyards. Situated in one of Italy’s most prestigious wine regions, the estate benefits from a long local heritage of Nebbiolo cultivation and classic winemaking. By focusing on careful vineyard management, hand harvesting, and time-honored cellar practices, La Morandina contributes to the reputation of Piemonte as a benchmark region for ageworthy, terroir-driven red wines.
