Description
La Mission Haut-Brion 2000 is one of Bordeaux’s great collector’s wines, combining remarkable power with the refinement and depth that have made the estate legendary. Coming from a historic property whose modern era was shaped by the Dillon family, this vintage stands out for its concentration, longevity, and classic Graves character.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, opaque purple hue that still looks remarkably youthful for its age. The bouquet is intense and layered, with notes of blueberries, blackcurrants, graphite, asphalt, and subtle oak in the background.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and massively concentrated, yet balanced by good acidity and round, substantial tannins. It delivers the kind of structure and freshness that suggest decades of evolution ahead, and Robert Parker famously considered it one of the wines of the vintage. Anticipated aging potential is exceptionally long, with a maturity window that can stretch well into the coming decades.
Production
Château La Mission Haut-Brion is located in Bordeaux’s Graves appellation, where its 29 hectares of vineyard benefit from a terroir well suited to producing wines of depth, finesse, and ageworthiness. The estate’s red plantings include Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, while a smaller portion is dedicated to white varieties. The grapes are hand-harvested in the cool hours before dawn to preserve acidity and minimize oxidation, then undergo rigorous selection in both vineyard and cellar before vinification.
Food & Serving
This wine is best served with rich, savory dishes such as roasted lamb, beef Wellington, game, truffle-based dishes, or mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant carefully for several hours if drinking now, especially to allow its layers of aroma and structure to fully open.
Producer
Château La Mission Haut-Brion traces its roots back to the 16th century and entered its modern chapter in 1919 under the American Woltner family. In 1983 it was purchased by Clarence Dillon, owner of nearby Château Haut-Brion, who replanted much of the vineyard and oversaw the construction of a new cellar completed in 1987, later renovated in 2007. Recognized in the 2009 Liv-Ex reclassification as a Premier Cru wine, the estate is widely regarded as one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious names and a benchmark for fine wine quality.
