Description
La Mission Haut-Brion 1990 is a remarkable Bordeaux from one of the region’s most revered estates, combining power, perfume, and a beautifully evolved sense of harmony. Made in a hot, generous vintage and drawn from the historic vineyards of Graves, it has long been admired for its classic depth and unmistakable La Mission character. With a reputation that places it among the greatest wines in the world, it remains a true benchmark for collectors.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a mature, slightly evolved hue with a lighter rim, reflecting its age gracefully. The bouquet is deeply expressive, unfolding with classic La Mission notes of camphor, licorice, scorched earth, hot bricks, barbecue, cassis, blueberry, kirsch, blackberry, black olive, and warm gravel, layered with subtle autumnal woodland tones.
On the palate, it is broad, expansive, and velvety, with opulent texture, impressive balance, and a long, weighty finish. The wine still carries remarkable energy and detail, and while it has already reached a beautiful stage of maturity, it can continue to hold well in a cold cellar for years to come.
Production
Château La Mission Haut-Brion lies in the Graves district of Bordeaux, on a historic site whose roots go back to the 16th century. The estate spans 29 hectares, including 25 hectares of red varieties—Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc—and 4 hectares dedicated to white grapes. Grapes are hand-harvested in the cool hours before dawn to preserve freshness and limit oxidation, then undergo rigorous selection both in the vineyard and in the cellar before pressing and vinification.
Food & Serving
This is a wine to enjoy with richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck, game birds, truffled dishes, or slow-braised meats. Serve it at around 16–18°C, and decant gently if needed, especially if opening now, to allow the aromas to fully unfold.
Producer
Château La Mission Haut-Brion entered its modern era in 1919 under the American Woltner family, who owned it until 1983, when it was acquired by Clarence Dillon, owner of neighboring Château Haut-Brion. Dillon invested heavily in the estate, including major vineyard replanting and the completion of a new cellar in 1987, with further renovations in 2007. In 2009, La Mission Haut-Brion was elevated to Premier Cru status in the Liv-Ex reclassification, cementing its standing as one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious and consistently outstanding properties.
