Description

La Mission Haut-Brion 1989 is one of Bordeaux’s truly monumental wines: opulent, deeply layered, and famously precise. From one of the great estates of Pessac-Léognan, this vintage captures the power of the hot 1989 growing season while retaining the polish and balance that have made La Mission legendary. It is a classic collector’s bottle with historic depth and exceptional pedigree.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a still-vivid blue-purple core with only the first signs of garnet at the rim. The bouquet is expansive and highly expressive, offering licorice, crème de cassis, blueberry liqueur, smoky barbecued meats, truffle, and graphite, with the kind of complexity that unfolds continuously in the glass. The palate is full-bodied and lavish, yet beautifully composed, with sweet, velvety tannins and a fresh, lively drive that keeps the wine from feeling heavy. It has the richness and seamless texture of a great mature Bordeaux, and its structure suggests that it can continue to give pleasure for many years to come.

Production
Château La Mission Haut-Brion is located in Pessac-Léognan, where gravel-rich soils and a warm Bordeaux climate provide ideal conditions for ripe, concentrated Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. The estate practices meticulous hand-harvesting in the cool pre-dawn hours to preserve freshness and limit oxidation, followed by severe selection both in the vineyard and in the cellar. The wine is crafted with precision to emphasize depth, purity, and age-worthy structure.

Food & Serving
This wine deserves classic, richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb, duck breast, beef tenderloin, or game with earthy sauces and truffles. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16-18°C, and decant gently before drinking if needed, especially if the bottle has been resting for many years, to help the aromatics open fully.

Producer
Château La Mission Haut-Brion dates back to the 16th century and entered its modern era in 1919 under the Woltners before being acquired in 1983 by Clarence Dillon, owner of neighboring Haut-Brion. Significant vineyard replanting and the construction of a new cellar followed, helping to reinforce the estate’s standing among Bordeaux’s elite. In 2009, La Mission Haut-Brion was recognized as a Premier Cru in the Liv-Ex reclassification, confirming its place among the world’s most highly regarded wines.
