Description

La Gaffelière 2020 is a poised, beautifully composed Saint-Émilion that follows in the footsteps of the outstanding 2019, yet stands confidently on its own. Brimming with aromas of plum, sweet red berries, licorice, mint and earthy clay tones, it offers a classic yet vibrant expression of Right Bank Bordeaux. With a full 40% Cabernet Franc in the blend, this is a wine that highlights finesse, structure and the estate’s quiet rise back to the very top of Saint-Émilion.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Gaffelière 2020 shows a deep, saturated ruby-purple hue, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is complex and expressive, layering ripe plums, wild red berries and black cherries with notes of licorice, fresh mint, violets and a distinctive clay-tinged earthiness that speaks clearly of its terroir. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, silky and polished, with a core of vibrant, pure fruit framed by lively acidity. The 40% Cabernet Franc brings aromatic lift, freshness and fine-boned structure, while Merlot (and a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, if present) adds plushness and depth. Powdery, ultra-fine tannins give a refined texture and long, persistent finish. Still youthful, this 2020 has excellent aging potential: it will start to show beautifully after 5–7 years in bottle and can easily evolve over 15–20 years under good cellar conditions.

Production
Château La Gaffelière lies on some of Saint-Émilion’s most privileged limestone and clay-limestone slopes, just south of the village, where excellent drainage and poor, mineral-rich soils naturally limit yields and intensify flavor. The vines—dominated by Merlot and an unusually high proportion of Cabernet Franc—are tended with great care, with hand-harvesting in small lots to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes make it into the winery. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve elegance and aromatic purity rather than sheer power. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (a portion new), allowing the tannins to refine and the various components to knit together without overwhelming the fruit’s vibrancy.

Food & Serving
This Saint-Émilion is a natural partner for refined dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, duck breast, veal chops, or game birds, as well as mushroom-based dishes and truffle-inflected cuisine that echo its earthy undertones. Mature cheeses—particularly aged Comté, hard goat’s cheeses or a well-aged Tomme—also make excellent companions. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity. Young bottles will benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and open up the nose, while older, cellared bottles should be decanted more gently, mainly to remove sediment.

Producer
Château La Gaffelière is one of the historic names of Saint-Émilion, classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé and owned by the Malet Roquefort family for centuries. Situated on the fabled limestone côtes just behind the village, the estate has long been considered a ‘sleeping giant’—blessed with great terroir yet only in recent years fully realizing its potential through renewed investment and meticulous vineyard work. Today, La Gaffelière is widely recognized as one of the most exciting estates in the region, particularly noted for its high proportion of Cabernet Franc, which lends distinction and perfume to the wines. Recent vintages, including 2019 and 2020, have confirmed its status as a leading light of modern Saint-Émilion, marrying tradition with precision and elegance.
