Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Fugue de Nenin 2020 shows a deep, vivid ruby-purple hue, signaling both youthful energy and concentration. The nose is immediately seductive: ripe black cherry, plum and blackberry are layered with notes of violet, graphite, cocoa, fresh tobacco leaf and a touch of warm spice from careful oak aging. On the palate, the wine is silky and generous, with Merlot’s plush, dark fruit at the core and Cabernet Sauvignon bringing structure, freshness and a fine, linear backbone. Flavors of black cherry, damson plum and cassis unfold alongside hints of licorice, cedar, mocha and a subtle mineral edge. The tannins are polished and velvety, framing a medium to full body with a long, refined finish. While already enjoyable in its youth for its juicy fruit and charm, this 2020 vintage has the balance and structure to evolve nicely over the next 8–12 years, gaining complexity and tertiary notes with time in bottle.

Production
La Fugue de Nenin is sourced from parcels that sit just below the famed Pomerol plateau, directly adjacent to the plots used for the Grand Vin. Here, the vineyard soils are a classic Pomerol mosaic: oligocene clay overlain with alluvial gravel from the Dordogne, mixed with silica-rich clays, fine gravel, quartz, granite fragments, iron-rich “crasse de fer” and basalt pebbles. This complex terroir contributes both richness and a distinctive mineral tension to the wine. Following the acquisition of Château Nenin in 1997 by Jean-Hubert Delon, the estate underwent a complete modernization: vineyards were replanted where necessary, drainage improved, pruning and trellising refined, and the cellars rebuilt, enlarged and temperature-controlled. Hand harvesting allows for precise selection of perfectly ripe grapes, which are then vinified in a modern, high-tech vat room designed to respect fruit purity and parcel identity. Fermentations are carefully monitored to extract fine tannins and vibrant aromatics, followed by élevage in French oak barrels to add texture and complexity without overwhelming the fruit.

La Fugue de Nenin 2020 is a versatile Pomerol that shines with classic dishes such as roasted lamb, duck breast, veal chops and beef tenderloin, as well as richer poultry dishes with mushroom sauces. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, truffle-inflected cuisine, lentil or mushroom ragouts, and semi-hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and silky texture. Younger bottles benefit from 30–60 minutes in a decanter to open up the bouquet and soften the tannins, while more mature bottles can simply be gently double-decanted to remove any sediment.

Château Nenin is one of Pomerol’s historic estates, long owned by the Despujol family from 1847 until its purchase by Jean-Hubert Delon, also proprietor of Château Léoville-Las Cases in Saint-Julien, in 1997. Under the Delon family’s stewardship, Nenin has been transformed through extensive vineyard restructuring, improved drainage, replanting and state-of-the-art winery upgrades, firmly positioning it among the leading names of the appellation. The vineyard, largely in one contiguous block on and around the Pomerol plateau, is renowned for its exceptional clay-gravel soils and its ability to produce wines of both power and finesse. La Fugue de Nenin, the estate’s second wine, was created to express a more immediately accessible, charming side of this great terroir, while maintaining the precision, balance and classical style that have made Château Nenin a reference point in modern Pomerol.
