Description
La Fortuna Brunello di Montalcino 2013 is a beautifully classical expression of Sangiovese Grosso from the eastern slopes of Montalcino. It brings together the purity of fruit, finely etched structure and long aging potential that define this celebrated vintage. With vineyards facing both north and south, La Fortuna crafts a Brunello of striking balance, complexity and authenticity. This Brunello stands out for its combination of elegance and depth: 36 months in large Slavonian oak casks followed by at least 12 months in bottle allow the wine to gain harmony without overwhelming the fruit. The cooler, stable 2013 growing season extended the ripening period, yielding grapes with intense aromatics, fresh acidity and refined tannins—hallmarks of a truly ageworthy Brunello. Rooted in calcareous clay soils and shaped by wide day–night temperature swings, it reflects the historic terroir of Montalcino in a decidedly traditional style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Fortuna’s 2013 Brunello shows a deep ruby core that is beginning to evolve towards garnet at the rim, signalling both concentration and gentle bottle age. The nose opens with ripe red cherries and Morello cherries, rose petals and dried herbs, layered with balsamic hints, subtle tobacco, roasted coffee bean and a touch of sweet spice.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet poised, with a vibrant line of acidity and finely knit, silky but firm tannins that carry the flavours long across the tongue. Juicy red fruit intertwines with savoury, tertiary notes of leather, underbrush, dried flowers and spice, gaining complexity as it breathes. The finish is long, mineral and harmonious, with a lingering impression of red fruit, earth and gentle oak. Already highly enjoyable, this 2013 still has excellent aging potential and can continue to evolve gracefully for another 10–15 years under proper cellar conditions.
Production
La Fortuna’s vineyards lie on the eastern side of Montalcino, planted on soils rich in limestone and clay that help retain freshness and give the wines their firm structure and mineral edge. Benefiting from marked diurnal temperature variation, the Sangiovese Grosso grapes develop complex aromatics and balanced phenolic ripeness. The grapes are harvested selectively at optimal maturity, then fermented in stainless steel tanks using a traditional approach that preserves the character of the fruit and terroir. After fermentation, the wine is aged for approximately 36 months in large Slavonian oak casks, which lend subtle structure without overt oak imprint, followed by a minimum of 12 months of bottle aging before release to refine tannins and integrate the wine’s aromatic profile.
Food & Serving
This Brunello is a natural partner for richly flavoured, slow-cooked dishes such as braised lamb shanks, ossobuco, wild game, or rustic stews, and it shines alongside aged hard cheeses like mature Pecorino. Its savoury complexity also complements mushroom-based dishes and truffle-inflected cuisine. Serve at around 18 °C; for bottles with some age, decanting 1–2 hours before serving is recommended to help the wine fully open its bouquet and soften the tannins.
