Description

La Fortuna Brunello di Montalcino 2009 is a classically styled, full-bodied Brunello from the very heart of Tuscany, crafted from 100% Sangiovese Grosso. Sourced from the estate’s best parcels on clay and limestone soils, this vintage captures the richness of a warm year while keeping the elegance and freshness that define great Montalcino. The 2009 has reached a beautiful drinking window, offering mature complexity yet still enough structure to evolve further in the cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2009 La Fortuna Brunello shows a deep garnet core with brick-tinged edges, a subtle sign of graceful bottle age. The nose is expressive and layered, opening with ripe Morello cherries and dark plums, followed by dried rose petals, tobacco, balsamic nuances and hints of leather, undergrowth and sweet spice. On the palate, the wine is generous and silky, with ripe, well-integrated tannins and a lively, balancing acidity. Flavors of macerated cherries, blackberries and dried red fruits intertwine with notes of licorice, cedar, savory herbs and a touch of cocoa. The finish is long and elegant, with lingering spice and dark berry tones. While already offering impressive drinkability and complexity now, this 2009 still has several years of aging potential ahead, especially when properly stored.

Production
La Fortuna’s Brunello vineyards lie on a mix of clay and limestone soils around Montalcino, a terroir that naturally combines depth and structure with freshness and minerality in Sangiovese Grosso. The 2009 grapes were harvested by hand, with careful bunch selection in the vineyard and again at the winery to ensure that only perfectly ripe fruit was used. After gentle destemming, fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks with extended skin contact to extract color, aroma and fine-grained tannin in a traditional, measured way. The wine was then matured for about 36 months in large Slavonian oak casks, followed by a further 12 months of bottle aging before release, allowing the various components to knit together into a harmonious, complex whole.

Food & Serving
This Brunello is a natural partner for hearty Tuscan and game-based dishes: think bistecca alla Fiorentina, slow-braised beef, wild boar ragù, venison stews and earthy mushroom dishes. It also shines alongside aged hard cheeses, particularly mature Pecorino Toscano. Serve at around 16 °C in large-bowled glasses to let the aromas fully unfold. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially at this stage of its evolution, to open up the bouquet and soften the remaining tannic grip.

Producer
La Fortuna is a family-run estate located just east of the town of Montalcino, with roots dating back to the early 20th century. Over generations, the family has steadily refined its focus on Sangiovese Grosso, becoming known for Brunellos that balance traditional craftsmanship with precise vineyard work. The estate’s holdings in some of Montalcino’s most favorable sites, combined with a commitment to hand-harvesting and long aging in large Slavonian oak, have earned La Fortuna a strong reputation among Brunello lovers. Today, the winery is regarded as a reliable source of classically structured, ageworthy Brunello di Montalcino that faithfully reflects its terroir and vintage character.
