Description
La Casale 120 Senecio Etna Rosso 2020 is a finely etched, volcanic red from the dramatic slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily. Crafted from Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, it captures the tension between mountain freshness and Mediterranean warmth in a beautifully transparent, terroir-driven style. This Etna DOC bottling stands out for its purity of fruit, mineral depth and the way it channels the character of one of Italy’s most exciting wine regions.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Senecio Etna Rosso 2020 shows a luminous, light ruby-red hue, almost reminiscent of a refined Pinot Noir. The nose is elegant and layered, with aromas of ripe red cherries and wild strawberries wrapped in notes of dried rose petals, subtle spice and a delicate volcanic smokiness. Hints of licorice, clove and a touch of dried herbs add complexity without overpowering the fruit.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, fresh and finely structured, with a lively acidity that keeps everything beautifully lifted. The tannins are ripe yet firm, giving a precise, linear feel that frames the fruit rather than dominating it. Flavors of red berries, blood orange and gentle spice glide into a long, saline-mineral finish that clearly speaks of Etna’s lava-rich soils. The 2020 vintage offers immediate pleasure now but also the structure and balance to evolve gracefully over the next 6–8 years, gaining more savory and tertiary nuances with time in the cellar.
Production
The grapes for La Casale 120 Senecio Etna Rosso 2020 are sourced from vineyards on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, where mineral-rich lava soils, high altitudes and marked diurnal temperature swings create ideal conditions for Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio. The fruit is harvested by hand to ensure careful selection in the vineyard, then gently destemmed before a controlled maceration and fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve aromatic clarity and freshness. After fermentation, the wine is aged for around 12 months in used oak barrels, allowing it to gain texture and complexity while keeping the focus on pure fruit and pronounced minerality, followed by further refinement in bottle before release.
Food & Serving
This Etna Rosso is a versatile partner at the table, shining alongside dishes such as grilled lamb chops with rosemary, Sicilian-style swordfish, roasted poultry, charcuterie, mushroom risotto or earthy pasta with tomato and herbs. It also works beautifully with semi-hard cheeses and delicately spiced Mediterranean cuisine. Serve at 16–18 °C to highlight its aromatics and fine-boned structure. A short decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up, especially in its youth, revealing more floral and mineral nuances.
Producer
La Casale 120 is a quality-focused producer that channels the distinctive character of Sicily’s volcanic landscapes into refined, expressive wines. Working within the Etna DOC, the estate emphasizes careful vineyard work and traditional, low-intervention cellar practices to let Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio speak clearly of their origin. Although relatively small in scale, La Casale 120 has contributed to the growing reputation of Etna as one of Italy’s most dynamic and terroir-driven wine regions, producing wines that balance authenticity, elegance and age-worthy structure.
