Description
La Braccesca Rosso di Montepulciano Sabazio 2024 is a polished Tuscan red that combines the charm of Sangiovese Grosso with the softness of Merlot. Produced by La Braccesca, part of the Antinori family’s celebrated portfolio, it reflects both modern finesse and the deep-rooted winemaking tradition of Montepulciano. Its name pays tribute to Sabatino Lulli, known as Sabazio, the monk whose medieval references helped document wine production in the area.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, expect a vibrant ruby-red color with a youthful, inviting sheen. The nose is typically expressive and fresh, with red cherry, plum, and blackberry notes complemented by subtle spice and floral hints.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and supple, with juicy fruit, smooth tannins, and a lively backbone of acidity that gives it freshness and balance. The Merlot adds roundness, while the Sangiovese Grosso provides structure and the classic Tuscan character. Best enjoyed young for its brightness and fruit purity, though it should hold well over the next few years.
Production
Fattoria La Braccesca spans more than 1,250 hectares across two distinct estate blocks: the historical core in Montepulciano, with around 255 hectares planted in some of the appellation’s finest zones, and a second property near Cortona with extensive vineyard land. The estate’s vineyards benefit from the varied Tuscan terroir, where altitude, soils, and exposure help shape wines with both fragrance and structure. Sabazio has been produced in the zone since the 1992 vintage, and is crafted to highlight freshness, balance, and regional identity.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with Tuscan-inspired dishes such as pasta with ragù, grilled meats, roasted chicken, and aged pecorino. It also works well with mushroom dishes, sausages, and simple pizza or antipasti. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting is optional but can help open the wine if enjoyed shortly after opening.
Producer
La Braccesca is one of the Antinori family’s important estates in Tuscany, known for combining heritage, scale, and precision winemaking. With vineyards in both Montepulciano and Cortona, it plays a significant role in expressing the diversity of the region. Under Antinori’s stewardship, the estate has earned a strong reputation for quality and consistency across its wines.
