Description
Krug Clos d’Ambonnay 2002 is one of Champagne’s rarest and most sought-after prestige cuvées, drawn from a tiny 0.68-hectare clos in the heart of Ambonnay. Made exclusively from Pinot Noir and aged extensively in Krug’s cellars, it reflects the house’s uncompromising precision and deep respect for exceptional terroir. First created in 1995 and released later as an ultra-limited expression, it stands as a modern benchmark for single-vineyard Champagne.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a luminous pale gold hue, hinting at its long maturation. The bouquet is layered and refined, with notes of ripe wheat, gingerbread, candied orange peel, and a delicate touch of hazelnut.
On the palate, it is beautifully structured and impressively concentrated, combining richness and intensity with the finesse expected from Krug. The finish is exceptionally long, unfolding with a persistent citrus lift. While already magnificent, it has the depth and balance to evolve gracefully for many more years.
Production
Clos d’Ambonnay comes from a single enclosed vineyard in Ambonnay, a village prized for Pinot Noir in the Montagne de Reims. The parcel’s very small size and distinctive terroir give the wine its singular character and rarity. The grapes are vinified with Krug’s hallmark attention to detail, then aged for more than 12 years in the cellar to build complexity, texture, and precision.
Food & Serving
Serve this Champagne chilled, ideally around 10–12°C, in a large white-wine glass to let its aromatics open up. It pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as lobster, truffled poultry, aged Parmesan, or delicate roast veal, and can also shine alongside citrus-accented seafood. Decanting is generally not necessary, though a short time in the glass will enhance its aromatic expression.
