Description
Krug 1998 Magnum is a rare and expressive vintage Champagne that captures the personality of a single harvest with remarkable precision. Known as a true Hommage au Chardonnay, it stands out for its purity, elegance, and exceptional length, making it a distinctive bottle from one of Champagne’s most respected houses.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, luminous golden colour that hints at both freshness and maturity. The bouquet is wonderfully layered, opening with notes of fresh bread and hazelnut, followed by dried fruit, caramelised orange peel, cocoa, pepper, and gingerbread as it warms in the glass.
On the palate, it is broad yet finely composed, with flavours of crystallised citrus, dried fruit, caramelised citrus peel, pepper, and spice wrapped in a soft, creamy texture. The finish is very long and refined, and while it is already deeply expressive, the magnum format gives it excellent ageing potential for many more years.
Production
Krug Vintage is always made from the most expressive wines of a single year and matured for more than a decade in Krug’s cellars before release. For the 1998 vintage, the house placed particular emphasis on Chardonnay, which showed exceptional character in that year, while Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier complete the blend in the classic Champagne tradition. This vintage comes from the Champagne region of France, where Krug’s cellar approach is designed to preserve individuality, complexity, and balance.
Food & Serving
Krug 1998 Magnum is ideal with refined dishes such as lobster, scallops, truffle risotto, roasted poultry, or lightly aged hard cheeses. Serve chilled at around 9–12°C to allow the aromas and texture to unfold beautifully. Decanting is generally not necessary, but giving it a few minutes in the glass can help reveal its full aromatic depth.
Producer
Champagne Krug was founded in 1843 and has long been regarded as one of the benchmark houses in Champagne, especially for its meticulous cellar work and distinctive style. Based in Reims, Krug is known for crafting wines with exceptional depth, individuality, and ageing capacity, and its Vintage cuvées have earned a reputation among collectors and enthusiasts for their precision and complexity.
