Description

Kissinger-Bähr Riesling Orbel 2024 Magnum is a generous, cellar‑worthy expression of Riesling from one of Rheinhessen’s most respected vineyard sites. Bottled in magnum for slower, more harmonious maturation, it offers both immediate drinking pleasure and excellent aging potential. This is a precise, terroir-driven white that showcases the mineral-rich character of the Orbel slope and the finesse that Weingut Kissinger brings to classic German Riesling.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Kissinger-Bähr Riesling Orbel 2024 shows a bright, pale straw color with green reflections, signaling its youthful energy and freshness. The nose is vibrant and detailed, with lifted aromas of lime zest, green apple, white peach and juicy pear, layered over notes of wet stone, white flowers and a hint of herbaceous freshness. On the palate, the wine is dry to off-dry in style (typical of high-quality Rheinhessen Riesling), with a racy yet balanced acidity that keeps everything taut and refreshing. Citrus and stone fruit flavors dominate at first—think lime, grapefruit and ripe peach—before the more savory, mineral tones of crushed slate and saline come through on the mid-palate. The finish is long, clean and mouthwatering, with a fine, almost chalky texture. In magnum format, this 2024 has the structure to evolve beautifully over 8–12 years, developing more honeyed, smoky and complex notes while retaining its backbone of freshness.

Production
The Orbel vineyard, located on the famed Rheinhessen ‘Roter Hang’ near Nierstein, is known for its steep, south-facing slopes and distinctive red slate and sandstone soils that impart both ripeness and a pronounced mineral edge to Riesling. At Weingut Kissinger, the grapes for this cuvée are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, allowing for careful selection of only the healthiest clusters. After a gentle pressing, the must is usually cold-settled before undergoing a cool, controlled fermentation—often in stainless steel—to preserve aromatic purity, crisp acidity and a clear expression of terroir. The wine is then rested on its fine lees to build texture and complexity before being bottled in magnum, where the larger format promotes a slower, more nuanced evolution.

Food & Serving
Kissinger-Bähr Riesling Orbel 2024 Magnum is an excellent partner for refined, flavor-driven cuisine. It pairs beautifully with fresh seafood (such as oysters, ceviche, scallops, or grilled prawns), sushi and sashimi, as well as lightly spiced Asian dishes, Vietnamese salads and Thai cuisine with lime and lemongrass. It also complements white asparagus, goat’s cheese, poultry in citrus-based sauces, and elegant vegetarian dishes featuring spring vegetables or fresh herbs. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C; younger bottles can be enjoyed without decanting, but in magnum, giving it 20–30 minutes in a carafe can help the aromas unfold and the texture broaden in the glass.

Producer
Weingut Kissinger is a quality-focused family estate in Rheinhessen, Germany’s largest and one of its most dynamic wine regions. While Rheinhessen has a long history as a source of classic German whites, estates like Kissinger have been instrumental in elevating the region’s reputation through low yields, meticulous vineyard work and a clear commitment to terroir-driven Riesling. With prime holdings in top sites such as Orbel, the winery crafts wines that are both authentic and contemporary—precise, mineral and food-friendly. Over the years, Weingut Kissinger has gained recognition among sommeliers and enthusiasts for its consistent quality and its expressive, place-focused style, solidifying its role as a notable producer in the modern Rheinhessen renaissance.
