K.F. Groebe’s Riesling Aulerde Großes Gewächs 2022 Magnum comes from one of Westhofen’s most prized sites, where old vines and a singular terroir shape a deeply characterful wine. From the VDP.GROSSE LAGE® Westhofener Aulerde, this is a Grand Cru-level Riesling that combines ripe fruit, mineral precision, and the breadth that only a magnum format can further enhance.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a bright, polished appearance with the concentration and energy expected from a top-site dry Riesling. The nose is expressive and layered, with ripe yellow fruit such as apricot and mirabelle, a touch of exotic fruit, candied lemon, and a fine sweet-spice character. On the palate, the wine should feel structured, mineral-driven, and impressively deep, with the old vines lending both concentration and complexity. The classic large oak cask élevage adds subtle texture and length without overpowering the fruit, while the magnum format supports graceful development over time. This is a Riesling with excellent aging potential and the ability to gain even more nuance with cellar time.

Production
The Aulerde lies on the historic slopes of Westhofen, once shaped by the ancient Rhine, with vines rooted in deep loess-clay soils over green clay subsoil. The 60-year-old vines draw on these mineral-rich layers, giving the grapes distinctive tension and site expression. As with nearly all of Fritz Groebe’s wines, the wine is matured classically in large wooden casks, preserving freshness while adding structure and depth to the final wine.

Food & Serving
Serve this dry Riesling well chilled, ideally at 10–12°C, to highlight its precision and aromatic detail. It pairs beautifully with refined seafood, shellfish, roast poultry, asparagus dishes, and Asian-inspired cuisine with a touch of spice. Decanting is not essential, but a short aeration can help the wine open up if enjoyed young.
