Description

Karl Schnabel Blaufränkisch Koregg 2020 is a characterful red from the rolling hills of Styria, Austria, where cool Alpine influences meet sun-warmed slopes. This single-vineyard wine showcases Blaufränkisch in a more elegant, vertical style than its Burgenland cousins, with a focus on purity, spice and stony finesse. Koregg is one of Schnabel’s signature sites, and this bottling captures both the precision of the terroir and the soulful touch of a small, quality‑driven grower.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Koregg 2020 shows a vibrant, translucent ruby to garnet hue, with a luminous edge that hints at its freshness and energy. The nose is lifted and detailed, offering wild forest berries, sour cherry and redcurrant layered with cracked white pepper, dried herbs, rosehip, subtle smoke and a distinct stony, ferrous minerality. On the palate, this is a taut, medium-bodied Blaufränkisch with a linear, focused profile. Juicy red and blue fruits are framed by brisk, mouthwatering acidity and fine, chalky tannins that feel both firm and refined. Notes of cranberry, pomegranate, black tea, violets and a touch of savory spice unfold with air, leading to a long, precise finish marked by cool minerality and a gentle, earthy undertone. Enjoyable now with a short decant, the 2020 vintage has the structure and acidity to evolve gracefully over the next 6–10 years, gaining complexity and softness while retaining its lively backbone.

Production
The Koregg vineyard sits on steep, well-drained slopes in Styria, where vines root deep into a mix of slate, schist and limestone-rich soils, all influenced by a cool, Alpine-tinged climate that preserves acidity and aromatic nuance. Karl Schnabel farms his estate organically and biodynamically, working by hand on the terraces, with low yields and careful selection at harvest to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy Blaufränkisch grapes are brought to the cellar. Vinification is typically gentle and minimally interventionist: spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, extended maceration in open vats, and élevage in used wooden barrels to allow the wine to develop texture and complexity without overt oak imprint, followed by bottling with little or no fining and filtration to preserve the wine’s natural character.

Food & Serving
Blaufränkisch Koregg 2020 is a versatile food wine that shines alongside dishes with earthy, savory depth rather than heavy richness. Think roast chicken with herbs, grilled pork chops, mushroom risotto, charcuterie, Austrian schnitzel, or lighter game birds such as quail or pheasant; it also works beautifully with alpine cheeses and rustic vegetable dishes featuring beetroot, lentils or root vegetables. Serve at 14–16°C (slightly cooler than room temperature) to highlight its freshness and spice. A 30–60 minute decant is recommended in its youth to allow the aromatics to open and the tannins to soften, especially if pairing with more structured, protein-rich dishes.

Producer
Karl Schnabel is a small, highly regarded grower in Styria, known for his dedication to biodynamic farming and expressive, terroir-driven wines. Working predominantly with steep, hand-tended parcels, Schnabel has become a reference point for a more artisanal, low-intervention style in the region, showing that Styria can produce reds of finesse, precision and ageworthiness alongside its celebrated whites. His focus on indigenous varieties, restrained extraction, and minimal cellar manipulation has earned him a loyal following among sommeliers and enthusiasts seeking authentic Austrian wines that convey a clear sense of place, with the Koregg bottlings standing among his most distinctive and sought-after cuvées.
