Description

Kaapzicht Skraalhans Pinotage 2023 is a vibrant, modern expression of South Africa’s signature grape from the rolling hills of the Coastal Region. Crafted to be juicy, bright, and immediately approachable, it shows a lighter, more playful side of Pinotage without losing the grape’s distinctive character. Coming from one of the Cape’s Pinotage pioneers, this vintage bridges tradition and contemporary winemaking in a way that feels effortlessly drinkable.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Skraalhans Pinotage 2023 shows a luminous ruby hue with purple highlights at the rim, signaling its youth and freshness. The nose is lifted and perfumed, offering crunchy red cherry, ripe raspberry, and wild strawberry, supported by hints of plum, floral notes, and a gentle touch of spice—think cinnamon and a whisper of clove. Subtle undertones of rooibos, dried herbs, and soft earth remind you of its Cape origins. On the palate, this is a lighter, more energetic style of Pinotage—medium-bodied, with juicy red fruit and a bright, mouthwatering acidity. Silky tannins give just enough grip to frame the fruit without weighing it down, while a clean, gently spicy finish invites another sip. This is a Pinotage meant to be enjoyed young for its vibrancy and purity of fruit, though it will comfortably evolve over the next 3–5 years, gaining a touch more softness and complexity.

Production
The grapes for Kaapzicht Skraalhans Pinotage 2023 come from the granitic slopes of the Bottelary Hills in the Coastal Region of the Western Cape, where vines enjoy cooling breezes from False Bay and ample sunlight on gently north-facing slopes. These decomposed granite soils naturally limit yields and help produce grapes with good concentration yet fresh acidity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to allow careful selection in the vineyards, then brought swiftly to the cellar. Vinification focuses on preserving fruit and finesse rather than power: a relatively short, cool fermentation on the skins to capture bright aromatics and supple tannins, followed by maturation—largely in older oak or a combination of tank and seasoned barrels—to keep oak influence subtle and let the lively Pinotage fruit lead.

Food & Serving
Skraalhans Pinotage 2023 is exceptionally versatile at the table, pairing beautifully with flame-grilled meats, charcuterie, and relaxed, flavor-packed dishes. Try it with South African-style braai, lamb chops with rosemary, BBQ ribs, gourmet burgers, or charred vegetable skewers; it also works well with pizza, tomato-based pasta, and mildly spiced dishes such as peri-peri chicken or pulled pork tacos. Serve slightly cool for a red—around 14–16°C—to highlight its freshness and juicy fruit character. Decanting is not essential, but a brief 15–20 minutes in a carafe can help the aromatics open up if you’re pouring it soon after opening.

Producer
Kaapzicht is a historic, family-owned estate in the Bottelary Hills, named for its sweeping “Cape view” of Table Mountain and Cape Town in the distance. The Steytler family has farmed here for generations, steadily transforming Kaapzicht from a supplier to the local cooperative into one of the leading independent producers in the region and an acknowledged specialist in Pinotage—regularly earning acclaim for some of the best single-vineyard examples in the world. Today, multiple generations work side by side: Danie Steytler Sr. and Jr. oversee 190 hectares of vineyards and the cellar, while the dynamic Yngvild drives sales and export, all underpinned by a strong social commitment to their workers and community. Kaapzicht’s wines are widely respected for their authenticity, sense of place, and consistently high quality within the Western Cape’s Coastal Region.
