Description

Kaapzicht Rooiland Pinotage 2021 is a characterful South African red that showcases just how refined and inviting Pinotage can be. Sourced from the renowned Coastal Region of the Western Cape, it offers a vibrant, modern expression of the country’s signature grape at an accessible level. This cuvée balances juicy fruit with savoury complexity, making it as versatile at the table as it is enjoyable on its own.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Rooiland Pinotage 2021 typically shows a deep ruby to purple hue with a youthful, vivid rim. The nose is generous and expressive, offering layers of ripe black cherry, plum and mulberry, supported by notes of raspberry, sweet spice, cocoa and a gentle touch of smoke or roasted coffee that hints at subtle oak influence. On the palate, expect a plush, medium- to full-bodied wine with silky tannins and a core of dark berry fruit. Juicy blackcurrant and red cherry are framed by hints of mocha, vanilla and a savoury, slightly earthy edge that gives definition and structure. The acidity is fresh without being sharp, making the wine feel smooth and approachable, while the finish lingers with warm spice and soft, dark fruit. Enjoyable now for its open, generous fruit, it should drink well over the next 3–5 years, gaining a bit more integration and softness with short-term cellaring.

Production
Kaapzicht’s Rooiland Pinotage is crafted from vineyards in the Coastal Region of South Africa’s Western Cape, an area benefiting from a combination of granite- and shale-based soils, warm sunny days and cooling ocean breezes from the nearby Atlantic and False Bay. These conditions help Pinotage achieve ripe, concentrated fruit while retaining freshness. Grapes are typically harvested selectively, often by hand, to ensure only optimally ripe bunches make it to the cellar. In the winery, the fruit is destemmed and fermented in stainless steel or concrete, with careful temperature control and gentle extraction to preserve bright fruit and avoid harsh tannins. Maturation in a mix of older and/or lightly toasted oak (often a combination of barrels and staves) adds subtle spice and texture without overpowering the grape’s natural character, resulting in a polished yet authentic expression of Pinotage.

Food & Serving
Kaapzicht Rooiland Pinotage 2021 is a natural partner for flavourful, hearty dishes. It pairs beautifully with grilled or barbecued meats—think lamb chops, marinated pork, beef burgers, boerewors and other sausages—as well as smoky ribs or braised short ribs. It also works well with rich poultry dishes like roast duck, spiced chicken, or game birds, and can stand up to mildly spiced South African, North African or even Asian-inspired cuisine. For cheese, try it with aged Cheddar, Gouda or semi-hard cow’s milk cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C; a light chill in warmer weather can be surprisingly refreshing. Decanting for 20–30 minutes can help the aromas open up, especially in the first few years after bottling.

Producer
Kaapzicht is a family-owned estate in the Bottelary Hills of Stellenbosch, with roots dating back to 1946 and farming history on the land stretching back even further. Over the decades, the Steytler family has earned a strong reputation for crafting characterful, terroir-driven wines, with a particular affinity for Chenin Blanc and Pinotage—two of South Africa’s hallmark varieties. The Bottelary Hills’ rolling vineyards, granitic soils and maritime influences have positioned Kaapzicht as an important voice in the broader Western Cape and Coastal Region. The winery has garnered numerous accolades in both local and international competitions, helping to elevate the standing of modern South African wines and demonstrating how Pinotage, in skilled hands, can be refined, expressive and world-class.
