Description

Joh. Bapt. Schäfer Riesling Pittermännchen Spätlese 2018 is a finely etched, residually sweet Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most coveted slate sites. It captures the elegance and lift that Pittermännchen is known for, even in the hot 2018 vintage, balancing ripe fruit with striking precision. This is a classic, delicately sweet German Spätlese that showcases both the pedigree of the vineyard and the meticulous touch of Sebastian Schäfer.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Spätlese shows a bright, luminous straw-yellow with greenish highlights, hinting at its freshness and youth. The nose starts out reserved, with cool notes of flint and a gentle herbal character, before opening up with aeration to reveal exotic layers of yellow kiwi, mango and lime, subtly framed by lemon balm and a whisper of slate smoke. On the palate, the wine is juicy and vibrant, with that hallmark Nahe interplay of sweetness and acidity. A core of yellow stone fruit—ripe peach, apricot and mirabelle—takes center stage, supported by a fine, mouthwatering minerality that keeps everything beautifully in balance. There is a touch of creaminess to the texture, but the wine remains light on its feet, never heavy or cloying. The finish is long, playful and precise, suggesting excellent aging potential: expect it to evolve gracefully over 10–15 years, gaining complexity in honeyed and herbal nuances while retaining its spine of freshness.

Production
The Pittermännchen vineyard is a steep, slate-dominated site in the Nahe, known for producing particularly filigreed and finely structured Rieslings. The poor, stony soils and excellent drainage naturally limit yields, concentrating flavor while preserving tension, even in warmer years like 2018. Grapes for this Spätlese are typically harvested by hand in selective passes, ensuring only perfectly ripe and healthy bunches are picked at higher must weights suited to the Spätlese style. In the cellar, gentle pressing and cool, slow fermentation—often in stainless steel, sometimes complemented by traditional large oak—help retain aromatic purity and highlight the vineyard’s mineral expression. The fermentation is stopped with a carefully judged amount of residual sugar, creating a balanced, delicately sweet wine that faithfully reflects its origin.

Food & Serving
This Riesling Spätlese is a versatile partner at the table. Its sweet-sour tension makes it a natural match for spicy Asian cuisine—think Thai curries, Vietnamese dishes with fresh herbs, or mildly spiced Szechuan dishes—as well as aromatic dishes featuring ginger, lemongrass or coriander. It also pairs beautifully with pâté, foie gras, soft blue cheeses, or fruit-based desserts that aren’t overly sweet, such as peach tart or citrus panna cotta. Serve well chilled at around 8–10°C. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes or generous swirling in the glass helps the initially shy nose unfold its exotic fruit and mineral complexity.
