Description

Joh. Bapt. Schäfer Riesling Goldloch Großes Gewächs 2019 is a benchmark dry Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most prized vineyard sites. Crafted in the Großes Gewächs style, it delivers crystalline precision, depth and remarkable aging potential. Sourced from the steep Goldloch vineyard, whose name alludes to the ‘golden’ quality of its grapes, this wine captures the essence of top-tier German Riesling in a single, meticulously made bottling.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Goldloch GG shows a luminous, pale straw-yellow color with greenish reflections, hinting at its youthful energy and freshness. The nose is initially restrained but unfurls with air, revealing a fine smoky-mineral note alongside ripe white peach, lime zest and hints of exotic fruit. Subtle herbal nuances – reminiscent of woodruff and fresh meadow herbs – add an extra layer of complexity. On the palate, this Riesling is intensely mineral-driven, dense and vertical, with a striking sense of tension. Think of a plunge into cool, stony spring water: vibrant, precise, and invigorating. Juicy stone fruit and citrus are wrapped in a finely woven, salty minerality, while the elegant acidity provides backbone without ever feeling sharp. The texture is both powerful and silky, with a gentle, almost creamy melt that balances its structural intensity. The finish is long, persistent and finely spicy, suggesting significant aging potential. Properly stored, the 2019 Goldloch GG will continue to develop for well over a decade, gaining further complexity and tertiary nuances over time.

Production
The Goldloch vineyard in the Nahe is known for its steep, well-drained slopes and rocky soils rich in weathered slate and quartzite, giving the Riesling a pronounced mineral character and natural concentration. At Weingut Joh. Bapt. Schäfer, work in the vineyard is careful and hands-on, with selective harvesting by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes make it into the cellar. The fruit is gently pressed and fermented slowly, typically with a focus on preserving purity, terroir expression and natural balance, often using stainless steel and/or large traditional German casks. The result is a dry Riesling of precision and depth, with no excess weight, allowing the site’s character to shine.

Food & Serving
This Goldloch Großes Gewächs pairs beautifully with refined cuisine: think sashimi or ceviche, grilled sea bass, shellfish, or scallops in a light citrus or herb butter sauce. It also shines alongside poultry with lemon and fresh herbs, veal in delicate cream sauces, or nuanced vegetable dishes such as asparagus, fennel or artichoke risotto. Serve at 10–12 °C to highlight its tension and aromatics. In its youth, decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended to allow the wine to open and reveal its layered nose and polished texture.

The Nahe is known as a cool-climate region in Germany.

Joh. Bapt. Schäfer is considered one of the top producers in the region, and the Goldloch is one of the best sites for Riesling. Fine maturity, plenty of aroma, and still some freshness characterize the wine.
