Description

Joh. Bapt. Schäfer Dorsheimer Pittermännchen Riesling Kabinett 2022 is a finely tuned, off-dry Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most historic steep-slope vineyards. Combining mouth-filling juiciness with razor-sharp precision, it delivers the classic Kabinett interplay of sweetness, acidity and minerality in a particularly elegant style. This wine stands out for its tension and finesse, capturing both the charm of ripe fruit and the cool, slate-driven backbone of Dorsheim’s famed Pittermännchen site.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Kabinett is pale lemon with green highlights, hinting at its youth and vibrancy. The nose is expressive yet refined, offering aromas of ripe yellow stone fruit and orchard fruit, wild herbs, lime zest, grapefruit and a distinct, fine slate minerality. Subtle balsamic and spice notes in the background echo the estate’s classically styled approach and the vineyard’s mineral signature. On the palate, the wine is mouth-filling yet wonderfully precise, with a juicy, almost lush fruit core that remains light on its feet. Ripe peach, mirabelle, citrus oils and tangy grapefruit are wrapped in a lively, well-integrated acidity that keeps everything taut and refreshing. The sweetness is present but finely judged, serving to add volume and texture rather than heaviness, while a firm, mineral spine brings focus and length. The finish is long, vibrating with tension and salty-mineral accents. Enjoyable now for its youthful energy, this Kabinett has the structure and acidity to develop additional complexity over the next 8–12 years, gaining more herbal, honeyed and slatey nuances with time in bottle.

Production
Dorsheimer Pittermännchen is one of the Nahe’s classic, steep vineyards, characterized by poor, stony, slate-influenced soils that naturally limit yields and intensify Riesling’s aromatic expression. The cool, breezy mesoclimate and excellent drainage promote slow, even ripening, preserving acidity and aromatic detail. Grapes for this Kabinett are typically harvested by hand at moderate must weights, ensuring healthy fruit with precise ripeness ideal for the Kabinett style. In the cellar, gentle pressing and a careful, temperature-controlled fermentation—often in stainless steel to protect freshness and purity—allow the wine’s delicate fruit, herbal notes and minerality to shine. A measured amount of residual sugar is retained to create the classic sweet-acid balance, after which the wine rests on its fine lees before bottling to enhance texture and finesse.

Food & Serving
This Riesling Kabinett is a superb partner for spicy and aromatic cuisine, particularly dishes with chili heat or sweet-spicy profiles. Think Thai curries, Vietnamese cuisine, Szechuan dishes, or spicy grilled prawns, as well as lighter Indian curries and aromatic stir-fries. It also pairs beautifully with fresh goat cheese, sushi, sashimi and lightly smoked fish, where its sweetness and acidity bring harmony and lift. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) to emphasize its freshness and tension. A brief, gentle aeration in the glass is usually sufficient; extended decanting is not necessary, though opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving can help the aromatics fully unfurl.

Producer
Weingut Joh. Bapt. Schäfer is a highly regarded family estate in the Nahe, known for crafting precise, terroir-driven Rieslings from steep, slate and quartzite-dominated vineyards around Burg Layen and Dorsheim. Over recent decades, the winery has gained increasing recognition for its focused, mineral wines that express the nuances of individual sites such as Dorsheimer Pittermännchen. With meticulous work in the vineyard, low yields and a restrained, quality-first approach in the cellar, Joh. Bapt. Schäfer has become an important name in the Nahe, regularly earning strong reviews and high scores from leading critics. Their Kabinett wines, in particular, are celebrated for capturing the traditional Prädikat style: elegant, finely sweet, and firmly anchored in their distinctive mineral terroir.
