Description
J. Hofstätter Barthenau Vigna Herbstofl Pinot Nero 2022 comes from one of Italy’s most celebrated Pinot Noir sites, where altitude, cool climate, and long family stewardship come together in a wine of remarkable finesse. Crafted from the historic Barthenau estate in Mazon, it carries the distinction of being part of Alto Adige’s pioneering single-vineyard tradition, first officially recognized in 1987.
Tasting Notes
Expect a refined, transparent ruby color in the glass, with the graceful intensity that makes great Pinot Nero so captivating. The nose typically leans toward red cherry, wild strawberry, floral notes, and subtle earthy spice, with the limestone-rich site adding a sense of purity and lift.
On the palate, this is a Pinot Noir of elegance rather than power, with supple tannins, fresh acidity, and a finely layered texture that gives the wine real depth. The 2022 vintage should show excellent balance and precision, with the structure to develop further over the next several years, gaining more complexity with bottle age.
Production
The wine comes from Mazon, a high plateau on the cooler eastern side of the southern Adige valley, widely regarded as one of Italy’s finest terroirs for Pinot Noir. The Vigna S. Urbano vineyard sits on clay-limestone soils that naturally encourage freshness, structure, and aromatic detail, helping produce a wine with notable elegance and depth. As a single-vineyard expression, it reflects a focused vinification designed to preserve the character of the site.
Food & Serving
This Pinot Nero pairs beautifully with dishes that complement its finesse, such as roast chicken, duck breast, mushroom risotto, veal, or porcini-based pasta. Serve slightly cool, ideally around 14–16°C, and consider a brief decant if drinking young to help the aromas open in the glass.
Producer
J. Hofstätter is one of Alto Adige’s most respected producers, with a long family history centered around the Barthenau estate, built more than 150 years ago by Ludwig Barth von Barthenau. The estate has become closely associated with some of the region’s most distinguished Pinot Noir, and the winery is especially notable for helping define the single-vineyard identity of Alto Adige. In 1987, this wine became the region’s first officially designated single-vineyard wine, marking a milestone in local winemaking history.
