Description
Jermann Riesling Afix 2014 is a distinctive expression of Riesling from the cool, northeastern corner of Italy, far from the variety’s more familiar German and Alsatian homes. Crafted by the renowned Jermann estate in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, this wine marries Italian finesse with Riesling’s hallmark precision and aromatic intensity. It’s a refined, terroir-driven white that appeals both to curious explorers and seasoned Riesling devotees. The unique selling point of Riesling Afix lies in its combination of vibrant acidity, mineral tension and layered aromatics, framed by Jermann’s meticulous winemaking. Expect impressive freshness for its age, with a profile that balances citrus, stone fruit and delicate floral notes against a subtle, savory edge. Jermann has long been a pioneer in Friuli’s rise to fame as one of Italy’s top white-wine regions, and Riesling Afix is a testament to the estate’s willingness to champion “non-traditional” varieties while remaining deeply rooted in local terroir.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2014 Riesling Afix shows a bright straw-yellow color, gently deepened by bottle age, with subtle green reflections at the rim. Swirl the glass and you’ll notice excellent clarity and a slight viscosity, hinting at concentration and structure.
The nose opens with lifted aromas of lime zest, mandarin peel and green apple, followed by white peach, jasmine and hints of chamomile. With air, more complex notes emerge: wet stone, a touch of hydrocarbon/petrol typical of quality, developing Riesling, and a faint herbal edge reminiscent of lemon balm.
On the palate, this is precise and linear yet texturally engaging. A vivid, mouthwatering acidity drives flavors of citrus (lime, grapefruit), crunchy orchard fruits and a nuanced, stony minerality. Mid-palate, there’s a suggestion of ripe peach and pear, balanced by a subtle saline note that adds interest and length. The finish is long, clean and dry, with a gentle echo of citrus peel and mineral tension rather than overt fruit sweetness.
From a 2014 vintage, this wine is in a beautiful drinking window now, with the primary fruit still present and more developed Riesling nuances beginning to show. Properly stored bottles should continue to evolve gracefully for several more years, gaining additional complexity and tertiary notes while maintaining their core freshness.
Production
Riesling Afix is sourced from Jermann’s vineyards in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, where cool nights, breezy conditions and well-drained, mineral-rich soils (notably the classic ‘ponca’ marl and sandstone found in the region) give white wines exceptional aromatic lift and clarity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of healthy, perfectly ripe bunches, a key factor for preserving Riesling’s delicate aromatics and naturally high acidity.
In the cellar, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks to maintain purity of fruit and to highlight the grape’s varietal character and the terroir’s mineral imprint. The wine is then aged on fine lees for a period, adding texture and subtle complexity without obscuring freshness. Oak, if used at all, is minimal and neutral, keeping the style focused, precise and vibrantly expressive rather than creamy or woody.
Food & Serving
Jermann Riesling Afix 2014 is highly versatile at the table, shining with a wide range of refined dishes. It’s an excellent match for delicate seafood preparations—think carpaccio of white fish, oysters, scallops, or grilled prawns—as well as simply prepared fish with citrus and herbs. It also pairs beautifully with sushi and sashimi, vegetable-based starters, asparagus, fresh goat cheeses and lightly spiced Asian cuisine, where its acidity and aromatics provide a refreshing counterpoint.
Serve at 8–10 °C (46–50 °F) to highlight its brightness and aromatic detail. A short decant of 15–20 minutes or simply opening the bottle a little ahead of serving can help the more nuanced mineral and floral tones unfold, especially at this stage of bottle age. Use a medium-sized white-wine glass to allow the bouquet to fully develop.
Producer
Jermann is one of Friuli-Venezia Giulia’s most acclaimed producers and a benchmark name for Italian white wines. Founded by the Jermann family of Austrian-Slovene origin in the late 19th century, the estate truly rose to international prominence under Silvio Jermann, who transformed it into a leading innovator from the 1970s onward. Their wines helped put Friuli on the global map thanks to a focus on quality, terroir and precision winemaking.
Now part of the extended Antinori family of estates—one of Italy’s most historic and respected wine dynasties—Jermann enjoys both deep local roots and world-class expertise. The winery is particularly renowned for its expressive, age-worthy whites made from both indigenous and international varieties, many of which consistently earn high ratings from critics and a loyal following among collectors and sommeliers worldwide. Riesling Afix reflects this spirit of innovation and excellence, showcasing how a classic Central European grape can thrive in Friuli’s distinctive landscape.
