Description
Jean-Michel Gaunoux Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières 2019 is a beautifully poised Chardonnay from one of Meursault’s most revered climats, combining ripe 2019 fruit with the stony precision that makes Les Perrières so sought after. It shows the hallmark tension of the site: generous texture, lifted minerality, and a refined sense of balance that keeps the wine firmly terroir-driven.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it presents a bright, polished appearance with the depth and concentration expected from a premier cru Meursault. The nose opens with ripe stone fruit, lemon tart, wet flint, and toasted nuts, all framed by a subtle, elegant oak influence.
On the palate, the wine has both breadth and drive, with a supple, expansive mid-palate brought into focus by precise acidity and a chalky, mineral backbone. It is already accessible, but the structure and concentration suggest excellent aging potential over the next 8–15 years, where it should gain further complexity and nuance.
Production
Les Perrières is one of Meursault’s most limestone-driven sites, giving the wine its signature tension, salinity, and crystalline minerality. For this cuvée, Jean-Michel Gaunoux uses spontaneous fermentation in oak barrels, with around 30% new oak, followed by aging sur lie for up to 14 months. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration to preserve its honest, site-expressive character.
Food & Serving
This is a natural match for rich seafood dishes such as lobster, scallops, turbot, or roasted cod with butter-based sauces, as well as poultry, veal, and creamy mushroom dishes. Serve at 10–12°C, and consider decanting for 20–30 minutes if opening it young to help the wine fully unfold in the glass.
Producer
Jean-Michel Gaunoux is a respected Meursault producer known for a traditional, understated style that lets vineyard character take the lead. The house has long been associated with terroir-focused white Burgundy, and its wines are admired for their balance, restraint, and capacity to age gracefully. In a region filled with benchmarks, Gaunoux has earned a solid reputation for producing Meursaults with real precision and authenticity.
