Description
Jean-Marie Bouzereau’s Volnay 1er Cru Champans is a beautifully refined expression of one of Volnay’s most admired Premier Cru vineyards. Crafted in a classic Burgundy style, it combines grace, depth, and structure in a way that highlights both the finesse of the appellation and the character of the 2018 vintage.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a clear ruby core with subtle garnet reflections. The nose is elegant and layered, opening with ripe cherry and raspberry, then unfolding into violet, gentle spice, forest floor, and a touch of liquorice. On the palate, it is silky and precise, with fine ripe tannins, bright freshness, and a harmonious balance of red fruit, mineral nuance, and spice that carries through to a long, persistent finish.
This is a wine that already offers considerable charm, but its balance and structure suggest very good aging potential. With time in bottle, the floral and earthy nuances will deepen further, adding even more complexity and polish.
Production
The grapes come from Champans, one of Volnay’s most respected Premier Cru sites in the Côte de Beaune, a vineyard known for producing wines with elegance, depth, and structure. Jean-Marie Bouzereau works traditionally and with close respect for terroir, aiming to preserve the purity and balance of the fruit. The vinification is handled in a restrained, terroir-driven style that emphasizes finesse rather than extraction.
Food & Serving
This Volnay pairs wonderfully with duck breast, veal tenderloin, mushroom-based dishes, roast poultry, and soft, mature cheeses. Serve it slightly cool, ideally around 15–17°C, and consider a gentle decant if drinking young to help the aromatics open up fully.
