Description

Jean Kreydenweiss Grimaudes Rouge Bio 2021 is a vibrant organic red from the sun‑drenched Languedoc, crafted in a new, fresher style that still captures the soul of the Mediterranean. Blending Carignan, Grenache Noir, Mourvèdre and Syrah, it offers juicy drinkability without sacrificing depth or character. This cuvée reflects a generational shift at the domaine, from powerful, weighty reds to wines driven by finesse, precision and energy.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Grimaudes Rouge Bio 2021 shows a luminous, medium ruby color with hints of purple at the rim, signaling its youth and freshness. The nose is expressive and inviting, with ripe red berries and cherries from the Grenache, dark plums and blackberries from Syrah and Mourvèdre, and a spicy, garrigue‑like note of thyme, rosemary and dried herbs. Subtle hints of black pepper, licorice, crushed stones and a touch of floral lift add complexity. On the palate, the wine is medium‑bodied, supple and wonderfully balanced, with juicy red and dark fruit framed by lively acidity and fine, powdery tannins. The earlier harvest and gentle extraction show in the wine’s elegance: it feels bright and flowing rather than heavy, yet there is enough structure and a savoury, mineral undertone to keep it serious and food‑friendly. The finish is fresh and slightly spicy, with lingering notes of wild berries and Mediterranean herbs. Best enjoyed over the next 3–6 years to take full advantage of its fruit vibrancy, though it has the backbone to age a bit longer in good cellaring conditions.

Production
The grapes for Grimaudes Rouge Bio 2021 come from 20‑ to 50‑year‑old vines in the “Les Grimaudes” vineyard near Manduel in the southern Languedoc, where the warm Mediterranean climate is moderated by cooling breezes. The soils are a striking, iron‑rich mix of pebbles over clay, interspersed with flint, sandstone, quartz and limestone, giving both ripeness and a distinctive mineral edge. Farmed organically and biodynamically, the vineyard is worked with respect for biodiversity, and harvesting is done by hand to ensure careful selection of healthy, ripe bunches. In the cellar, Jean Kreydenweiss favors an earlier harvest, gentle extraction and a light touch: the grapes are typically destemmed or only partly destemmed, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and raised in neutral vessels (cement or older barrels) to preserve purity of fruit, freshness and the subtle expression of terroir rather than oak.

Food & Serving
This Languedoc blend is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with grilled lamb chops, roast chicken with herbs de Provence, charcuterie, ratatouille, cassoulet, or Mediterranean vegetable dishes such as stuffed peppers and roasted aubergine. It also works well with wood‑fired pizza, tomato‑based pastas and semi‑hard cheeses. Serve slightly cool, at around 15–16 °C, to highlight its freshness and aromatic lift. A short decant of 20–30 minutes can help the wine open up its spice and garrigue notes, but extended decanting is not necessary—this is a wine meant to be enjoyed for its immediate charm and drinkability.

Producer
Domaine Kreydenweiss in Manduel is the southern outpost of the renowned Kreydenweiss family, long celebrated for their pioneering biodynamic work in Alsace. When Marc Kreydenweiss moved to the Languedoc around the turn of the millennium, he saw an opportunity to capture the power of the Mediterranean sun in generous, structured reds. Over time, and especially under the leadership of his son Jean, the estate’s style has evolved towards earlier picking, lighter extraction and a focus on finesse, tension and digestibility. Today, the domaine is regarded as one of the thoughtful, progressive voices in the region, producing certified organic (and largely biodynamic) wines that combine southern warmth with a precision more often associated with cooler climates, helping to redefine what Languedoc reds can be.
