Description

Jean Gagnerot Morey Saint Denis 2020 is a refined expression of village-level red Burgundy, crafted from Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir) in one of the Côte de Nuits’ most characterful appellations. This wine brings together the delicacy of fine Pinot with the structure and depth for which Morey-Saint-Denis is renowned, offering both immediate pleasure and age-worthy potential. The 2020 vintage in Burgundy was warm and concentrated, yielding wines with ripe fruit, polished tannins and impressive balance.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Morey Saint Denis shows a bright, translucent ruby hue with garnet reflections at the rim. The nose is elegant and layered: red cherries, wild strawberries and raspberry coulis are framed by notes of violet, rose petal, subtle sweet spice and a touch of forest floor and fine oak. On the palate, it is medium-bodied yet quite concentrated, with juicy red and dark berry fruit, hints of black cherry and cranberry, and a savoury core that is typical of Morey. Silky tannins and fresh, well-integrated acidity give the wine a long, precise finish with nuances of spice, crushed stone and a gentle earthiness. Enjoyable now with a brief aeration, it will continue to evolve beautifully over the next 8–12 years, gaining further complexity and tertiary notes of truffle, sous-bois and dried flowers.

Production
Sourced from selected parcels around the village of Morey-Saint-Denis in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, this wine reflects a classic Burgundian terroir of limestone-rich soils with layers of marl and clay, which naturally limit yields and enhance aromatic finesse. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to allow careful selection of perfectly ripe bunches in the vineyard. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, often with a portion of whole clusters to enhance aromatic lift and structural tension. Gentle extraction preserves the delicacy of Pinot Nero, while aging in French oak barrels—only a proportion of which are new—adds polish and subtle spice without overpowering the fruit or the expression of site.

Food & Serving
This Morey Saint Denis 2020 is a versatile food wine that shines alongside classic Burgundian dishes and refined cuisine: think roast duck with cherries, venison or guinea fowl, coq au vin, mushroom risotto, or simply roast chicken with herbs and root vegetables. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, charcuterie, soft cow’s milk cheeses like Reblochon or Époisses, and earthy truffle dishes. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) in Burgundy stems to highlight its aromatic detail. A short decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended in its youth to allow the bouquet to open; as the wine matures, gentle pouring straight from the bottle will be sufficient.

Producer
Jean Gagnerot is a historic Burgundian name, long associated with traditional négociant-éleveur practices and a deep network of grower relationships throughout the Côte d’Or. While not as widely publicized as some larger houses, the label has built a quiet reputation among Burgundy enthusiasts for delivering authentic, terroir-driven wines at a consistently high quality level. Firmly rooted in the region’s classic winemaking culture, Jean Gagnerot focuses on expressing the nuances of each appellation, from village wines like Morey Saint Denis to more prestigious crus, offering wine lovers a reliable window into the character and charm of Burgundy.
