Description
Jean-François Ganevat’s Sous la Roche 2018 is a distinctive Savagnin from the Jura, showing the richer, more generous side of this iconic terroir-driven style. Sourced from selected parcels on Triassic grey marl, it offers a fuller, more powerful expression while still carrying the precision and character that have made Ganevat one of the region’s most admired producers.
Tasting Notes
Pale gold in the glass, it opens with a focused, savory nose of ripe orchard fruit, citrus peel, crushed herbs, and a subtle mineral edge. On the palate, it is rounder and more enveloping than many Ganevat whites, with notable volume, firm structure, and a marked bitter finish that adds grip and length.
Despite its generosity, the wine remains very much in balance, with a salty, stony backbone and enough tension to keep it lively. The 2018 vintage already shows impressive harmony, and it should continue to evolve gracefully over the coming years, gaining further complexity and depth.
Production
Sous la Roche comes from a selection of parcels planted on grey marl soils from the Triassic period, a classic Jura terroir that suits Savagnin particularly well. The grapes are harvested from carefully chosen plots, and the wine is vinified in the meticulous, low-intervention style for which Jean-François Ganevat is known, allowing the vineyard character to come through clearly.
Food & Serving
This is a natural match for Jura classics such as Comté, hard alpine cheeses, roast poultry, mushroom dishes, veal, or rich seafood preparations like monkfish or shellfish with a buttery sauce. Serve slightly cool, around 10–12°C, and consider brief decanting if you want to open up its aromatics and soften the wine’s youthful structure.
Producer
Jean-François Ganevat is one of the most respected names in the Jura, known for deeply expressive wines that combine old-vine material, biodynamic farming, and a highly individual winemaking approach. The domaine has earned an international following for its purity, energy, and sense of place, and Ganevat is widely regarded as a benchmark producer in the region.
