Description
Jacques-Frederic Mugnier’s Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru 'Clos de la Maréchale' 2014 is a refined expression of Pinot Noir from one of Burgundy’s most respected addresses. Sourced from a historic premier cru site in Nuits-Saint-Georges, it combines Mugnier’s hallmark precision and restraint with the site’s deeper, more structured personality.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this is a bright, translucent ruby Pinot Noir with an elegant, understated presence. The bouquet leans toward vivid red fruits, lifted floral notes, and a subtle earthy edge, while the palate is medium-bodied, linear, and finely textured, with lively acidity and light tannins supporting the fruit.
As the wine opens, its aromatic profile can become more expressive and slightly wild, adding a touch of feral character and savory complexity. It is a wine built for patience rather than immediate impact, and with 10–15 years of cellaring it can gain greater depth, flesh, and nuance.
Production
Clos de la Maréchale is a historic premier cru vineyard in Nuits-Saint-Georges, worked by Jacques-Frederic Mugnier with a strong emphasis on preserving the natural balance of the vineyard. The domaine favors manual labor and preventive, environmentally conscious vineyard practices, aiming to maintain a healthy ecosystem rather than rely on heavy intervention.
In the cellar, the approach is equally restrained, with minimal technological interference so the wine can reflect its origin as purely as possible. The result is a Pinot Noir shaped by careful farming, a thoughtful hand in vinification, and a clear sense of terroir.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with duck breast, roast poultry, game birds, mushroom risotto, or veal with a light cream sauce. It also works well with earthy vegetarian dishes and aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 15–17°C, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes if drinking young to let the aromatics and texture open up.
Producer
Jacques-Frederic Mugnier is one of the great names of Chambolle-Musigny, based at the elegant Château de Chambolle-Musigny. The domaine was founded in 1863 by Frédéric Mugnier and remains especially prized for its Chambolle-Musigny holdings, widely regarded among the commune’s finest.
Frédéric Mugnier took over in 1985 and has steadily elevated the estate’s reputation through a serious, uncompromising approach to viticulture and winemaking. He is known for his patience with aging, and his decision to hold back Grand Cru Musigny longer reflects the domaine’s confidence in the wines’ ability to develop beautifully over time.
