Description

J. Hofstatter Barthenau Pinot Nero Vigna S. Urbano 2020 is one of Alto Adige’s benchmark Italian interpretations of Pinot Noir, combining alpine freshness with Burgundian finesse. Sourced from a single historic vineyard, this is a serious, cellar‑worthy red that balances elegance, structure and depth. Vigna S. Urbano has become a reference point for Pinot Nero in Italy, regularly cited among the country’s finest expressions of the grape.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Barthenau Vigna S. Urbano shows a luminous, medium ruby color with garnet reflections at the rim. The nose is refined and layered, opening with wild raspberry, red cherry and pomegranate, followed by floral notes of rose petal and violet, hints of sweet spice, forest floor, and a touch of cedar and cocoa from large oak casks. On the palate, it is precise and pure, with a silken texture supported by vibrant acidity and fine, chalky tannins. Ripe red berries and cherry fruit are framed by savory undertones of herbs, dried leaves and subtle mineral notes that reflect its cool‑climate, high‑altitude origins. The finish is long, graceful and persistent, promising further complexity with time. While already approachable with aeration, this 2020 vintage has the structure and balance to age beautifully for 8–15 years under proper cellar conditions.

Production
Vigna S. Urbano is a single vineyard within the historic Barthenau estate on the Mazon plateau in Trentino-Alto Adige, an area renowned for its cool nights, warm days and well‑drained, clay‑ and limestone‑rich soils—ideal conditions for Pinot Nero. The grapes are hand‑harvested at optimal ripeness, with rigorous selection in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only perfectly healthy, concentrated fruit is used. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature‑controlled stainless steel or open vats with gentle punch‑downs to extract color and tannin without harshness, followed by extended maturation in large oak casks and partly in smaller barrels to integrate structure while preserving purity of fruit and terroir expression.

Food & Serving
This Pinot Nero is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with roast duck, veal tenderloin, lamb chops, game birds, mushroom risotto, and refined dishes featuring truffles or porcini. It also complements aged Alpine cheeses and charcuterie. Serve at 14–16°C to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness; decanting for 45–60 minutes in its youth helps the wine open and allows the tannins to soften, while older bottles should be decanted gently and briefly to remove sediment.

Producer
Weingut J. Hofstatter, based in Tramin in Alto Adige, is one of Italy’s most respected family‑run estates, with roots dating back to the early 20th century. The winery has been instrumental in defining the region’s modern identity, particularly through its pioneering work with single‑vineyard bottlings and its focus on Pinot Nero and the local white variety Gewürztraminer. Barthenau and its Vigna S. Urbano parcel are among Hofstatter’s flagship sites, often cited in top Italian wine guides and international press as reference vineyards for Italian Pinot Noir. The estate’s commitment to meticulous vineyard work and sensitive, terroir‑driven winemaking has earned it a reputation as a benchmark producer in Trentino‑Alto Adige and beyond.
