Description
Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino 2019 is a classic expression of one of Italy’s most celebrated red wines, made entirely from Sangiovese in the heart of Tuscany. Known for its balance of power, finesse, and remarkable regional character, this is a Brunello that reflects both the pedigree of the producer and the long tradition of Montalcino winemaking.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby hue with garnet reflections, hinting at both concentration and the elegance that will develop with age. The nose opens with ripe red cherry, wild berries, dried rose petals, and subtle notes of tobacco, leather, and Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, it is structured and refined, with vibrant acidity, polished tannins, and layers of cherry, plum, spice, and earthy minerality. The finish is long and persistent, suggesting excellent ageing potential over the coming decade and beyond.
Production
Sourced from vineyards in Montalcino, where warm days, cool nights, and well-drained soils help Sangiovese develop its signature intensity and freshness. The grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, then vinified with careful temperature control to preserve purity of fruit and structure. Following fermentation, the wine is matured in oak to build complexity and integrate the tannins while maintaining the varietal character that defines Brunello di Montalcino.
Food & Serving
This Brunello pairs beautifully with rich Italian dishes such as slow-braised beef, wild boar ragù, mushroom risotto, and roasted lamb. It also works well with aged cheeses and truffle-based dishes. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the wine to open fully.
Producer
Il Poggione is one of the historic names in Montalcino, with roots stretching back to the late 19th century and a longstanding reputation for quality and consistency. The estate has played an important role in establishing the global prestige of Brunello di Montalcino, and it remains widely respected for producing wines that combine traditional character with impressive depth and ageing potential.
