Description
Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino 2017 is a classic expression of Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s most respected and historic estates. Crafted entirely from estate-grown fruit, this Brunello balances power and elegance, showcasing the warmth of the 2017 vintage while retaining remarkable freshness and structure. Long oak aging and meticulous vineyard work make this a benchmark wine for those seeking authentic, ageworthy Brunello.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino shows a deep, vibrant ruby core with garnet reflections forming at the rim. The nose is immediately inviting, with layers of ripe red cherry, plum and wild berries woven together with notes of dried herbs, violets, tobacco, leather and a gentle smokiness from large-format oak.
On the palate, this Brunello is full-bodied yet finely poised. Juicy red and black cherry, raspberry and blood orange lead the way, supported by hints of licorice, savory spice, cedar and a touch of balsamic. The tannins are firm but polished, giving the wine both grip and finesse, while fresh acidity keeps the finish long, focused and energetic. Drinking beautifully now with a decant, it also has the structure to develop additional complexity over the next 10–15 years, gaining more tertiary notes of leather, forest floor and truffle with time in bottle.
Production
Il Poggione’s vineyards lie in the prized southern zone of Montalcino, around Sant’Angelo in Colle, where warm days and cool nights help Sangiovese reach ideal ripeness while preserving acidity. The soils are a mix of clay, limestone and galestro (friable marl), giving both power and aromatic lift. Grapes for the Brunello are hand-harvested from older vines, with strict selection in the vineyard and cellar to ensure only the best bunches make the cut. After fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks with frequent pump-overs to extract color and fine tannins, the wine is aged for an extended period—typically around 30 months—in large French oak casks (botti), followed by additional time in bottle before release, allowing the components to harmonize and the wine’s distinctive Montalcino character to fully emerge.
Food & Serving
Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino 2017 is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised lamb shanks, wild boar ragù over pappardelle, ossobuco, or aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano and Pecorino Toscano. It also shines with truffle dishes, mushroom risotto and roasted game birds. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Bordeaux stems. For optimal enjoyment now, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the aromas and tannins to fully open; in a few years’ time, a shorter decant of about 45 minutes will be sufficient.
Producer
Founded in the late 19th century, Il Poggione is one of the historic names of Montalcino and among the pioneering estates that helped elevate Brunello to worldwide renown. Located in Sant’Angelo in Colle, the winery oversees a large, contiguous estate where vineyards, olive groves and woodland coexist, reflecting a deep commitment to the land. Over generations, Il Poggione has become known for an unwaveringly traditional style: 100% Sangiovese, long aging in large casks and a focus on purity of fruit and terroir. Consistently praised by international critics and featured regularly among the region’s top wines, Il Poggione holds a key place in the modern history of Brunello di Montalcino, offering wines that are both collectible and genuinely expressive of their Tuscan origins.
