Description
Il Poggione’s Brunello di Montalcino is a classic expression of Sangiovese from one of Tuscany’s most respected estates. Crafted from estate-grown fruit and aged in large oak casks, it combines purity of fruit with the structure and depth that have made Brunello one of Italy’s most celebrated wines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2017 Brunello shows a deep ruby-red colour with the kind of clarity and brightness typical of great Sangiovese. The nose is generous and open, revealing ripe black cherry, plum and subtle spice layered with notes from extended oak ageing.
The palate is elegant and well-balanced, with concentrated dark fruit supported by soft, mature tannins and a long, full finish. It is enjoyable now, but also has excellent cellaring potential under the right conditions, gaining further nuance and complexity with time.
Production
The Sangiovese grapes are sourced from Il Poggione’s own vineyards, including vines over 20 years old, rooted in the hills of Montalcino in Tuscany. The grapes are harvested and then fermented at controlled temperature for 15 days before the wine is transferred to oak.
Il Poggione uses large 30 to 50 hectolitre casks to preserve the balance between oak and fruit, followed by three years of ageing in wood before bottling. This traditional maturation style is one of the hallmarks of classic Brunello di Montalcino.
Food & Serving
This Brunello is a natural match for veal and lamb, especially grilled preparations, where the wine’s structure and savoury depth complement the richness of the meat. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the aromatics and texture to खुल unfold fully.
Producer
Il Poggione is one of the historic names of Montalcino, with a longstanding reputation for producing benchmark Brunello. The estate is known for its dedication to traditional methods, estate-grown fruit and consistent quality, and it has earned recognition as one of the region’s most reliable and respected producers.
