Description
I Piccoli Vignaioli PrimAlba Rosè is a charming, naturally sparkling rosé from Emilia-Romagna, crafted in the traditional ‘metodo ancestrale’ style. Made from 100% Sangiovese, it captures the rustic, everyday sparkle that farming families in Italy have enjoyed for generations. Unfiltered, gently effervescent and characterful, this is a wine that feels both authentic and refreshingly modern in its simplicity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, PrimAlba Rosè shows a delicate, hazy pink hue with a fine, lively bead and a softly cloudy appearance that hints at its ancestral production. The nose opens with bright red berry aromas—think wild strawberry and raspberry—supported by hints of pomegranate, rose petals and a subtle yeasty, bread-dough note from the natural bottle fermentation.
On the palate, it is dry to off-dry, crisp and vibrant, with a refreshing, slightly rustic fizz. Juicy red fruits are layered with citrus zest, a touch of cherry and a gentle savory, mineral edge that speaks to its artisanal origins. The texture is lightly creamy yet energetic, with the fine lees giving extra complexity and a pleasantly moreish finish. As an ancestrale, this wine is best enjoyed in its youth, within 1–2 years of release, to savor its fresh fruit and lively sparkle.
Production
PrimAlba Rosè is produced in Emilia-Romagna, a region known for its fertile plains and gentle hills that give Sangiovese a vibrant, fruit-forward profile. I Piccoli Vignaioli follow the traditional ‘forfædremetoden’—the ancestral method—where the wine begins its fermentation in tank and completes it in the bottle using only the natural sugars and yeasts of the grapes. The Sangiovese grapes are harvested by hand to ensure careful selection, then gently pressed to achieve the rosé color, before undergoing a spontaneous or minimally guided fermentation. Before all the sugars are fully converted, the still-fermenting wine is bottled, allowing a natural, second fermentation to create the fine bubbles. There is no heavy filtration, and often no dosage, preserving the wine’s authentic character and slightly cloudy appearance.
Food & Serving
This lively, characterful rosé is a natural partner for antipasti, charcuterie, soft and semi-soft cheeses, and simple Italian fare such as focaccia, cured meats, and tomato-based bruschetta. Its bright acidity and gentle tannic grip from Sangiovese also make it a fun match with pizza, grilled vegetables, light pasta dishes and seafood appetizers. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C. A brief, gentle swirl in the glass is often enough; decanting is not required, but if you prefer a clearer pour, you can let the bottle stand upright for a while to allow the lees to settle and then pour carefully, leaving the last cloudy centimeter in the bottle or, for extra texture, gently mix it in.
Producer
I Piccoli Vignaioli—literally “the small winegrowers”—embodies the spirit of Italy’s artisan farmers who have long made wine for daily enjoyment rather than mass production. Rooted in the traditions of Emilia-Romagna, they focus on honest, terroir-driven bottlings that highlight local grapes such as Sangiovese. By reviving and refining the ancestral method, they connect modern drinkers with the region’s rural heritage, celebrating techniques once used by families for their own sparkling house wines. Their commitment to minimal intervention and respect for tradition has earned them a place among the region’s most interesting small-scale, craft producers.
