Description

Hubert Lignier Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2021 is a finely etched expression of Gevrey-Chambertin’s silkiest Grand Cru terroir, rendered with the precision and depth that have made the domaine a benchmark in Burgundy. Crafted from Pinot Noir (Pinot Nero) in one of the Côte de Nuits’ most coveted climats, this wine marries intensity with a remarkable sense of finesse. The 2021 vintage, marked by low yields and a cooler growing season, has produced a Charmes-Chambertin of classical structure, lifted aromatics and striking purity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a luminous, medium ruby color with delicate garnet highlights at the rim, hinting at its refinement rather than sheer power. The nose is beautifully layered and evolving: wild cherries, red raspberries and crushed strawberries mingle with rose petals, violets, and a subtle woodland character—think damp earth, underbrush and a touch of truffle. Fine oak notes of sweet spice, clove, and a gentle hint of cocoa frame the fruit without overwhelming it. On the palate, this Charmes-Chambertin is all about precision and texture: silky yet firmly structured, with a core of ripe red berry fruit, Morello cherry and blood orange zest, wrapped in ultra-fine, chalky tannins. There is a vibrant line of acidity that keeps everything fresh and long, leading into a persistent finish with notes of savory spice, graphite and a faint saline edge from the limestone-rich soils. While already captivating with air in its youth, the 2021 has the balance and concentration to age gracefully for 12–20 years, gaining complexity, tertiary notes of undergrowth, dried flowers, and game as it matures.

Production
Sourced from the revered Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru in the northern Côte de Nuits, this wine reflects a terroir of well-drained, marl and limestone soils that give Pinot Noir both aromatic lift and fine-grained structure. The climate here is cool continental, with significant diurnal shifts that preserve acidity and detail in the fruit. At Hubert Lignier, vineyard work is meticulous: old vines are tended using lutte raisonnée principles, with careful canopy management, low yields, and manual harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches are selected. In the cellar, the grapes are traditionally vinified, often with a thoughtful proportion of whole clusters depending on the vintage character. Fermentations proceed with indigenous yeasts, followed by a long, gentle maceration to extract color and tannin without harshness. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—typically with a measured use of new oak—to refine texture and build complexity, before bottling with minimal intervention to preserve the purity of the terroir.

Food & Serving
This Grand Cru’s combination of depth and elegance makes it a superb partner for refined dishes: think roasted duck with cherries, pigeon or squab, veal tenderloin with morel mushrooms, or a classic côte de veau with jus. Earthy flavors complement it particularly well, such as truffle risotto, game birds, and dishes featuring wild mushrooms or root vegetables. It also shines alongside aged cheeses like Comté, mature Époisses (for those who enjoy intensity), or a well-aged Tomme. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth helps the wine open up and soften the tannins; for mature bottles, a gentle, shorter decant is recommended primarily to separate from any sediment.

Producer
Domaine Hubert Lignier is one of the great names of the Côte de Nuits, long revered for crafting profound, terroir-driven Pinot Noir from some of Burgundy’s most prestigious sites. Based in Morey-Saint-Denis, the family estate has been cultivating vines for generations, with Hubert Lignier’s work in the late 20th century helping to cement the domaine’s reputation internationally. Today, the domaine is run by the next generation, who continue the traditional, low-intervention approach while fine-tuning viticulture and cellar work to highlight clarity and finesse. With holdings in iconic vineyards across Morey, Gevrey-Chambertin and beyond, Hubert Lignier is widely regarded as a benchmark producer, regularly earning top critical acclaim for wines that combine structure, depth and ageworthiness with an unmistakable sense of place.
