Description
Hosanna 2019 is a sumptuous, modern Pomerol that shows just how seductive Right Bank Bordeaux can be in a great vintage. This is a richly styled red, layered with sweet berry fruit, ripe plum, exotic spice and a luxurious touch of creamy new oak. It’s a dramatic, enveloping wine that perfectly captures the generous, hedonistic side of Pomerol while retaining the poise and structure for graceful aging.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Hosanna 2019 is deep, opaque ruby with a vibrant purple rim, signalling both concentration and youth. The nose is immediately expressive and alluring, with waves of sweet blackberries and ripe plums wrapped in notes of star anise, clove, cocoa, vanilla bean and a gentle hint of toasted cedar from new oak. Subtle floral tones and a touch of licorice add lift and complexity.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, plush and velvety, with a broad, mouth-coating texture and beautifully polished tannins. Generously ripe dark fruit sits at the core—think black cherry compote, plum and blackcurrant—layered with mocha, baking spices and a faint savory note. Despite its opulence, the wine retains a fresh line of acidity and a fine-grained structure that keeps everything in balance. The finish is long and enveloping, echoing ripe fruit and spice. Enjoyable now with sufficient aeration, Hosanna 2019 will reward patience; it has the structure and concentration to evolve over 15–20 years or more in a good cellar, gaining additional truffle, tobacco and earthy complexity.
Production
Hosanna is located on the prized plateau of Pomerol in Bordeaux, where deep clay and gravel soils over an iron-rich subsoil produce some of the world’s most sensual Merlot-based wines. The blend is typically dominated by Merlot with a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc, which adds aromatic lift and structure. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, parcel by parcel, allowing meticulous selection in the vineyard and at the sorting table. Vinification is traditional yet precise: fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, followed by an extended maceration to gently extract color, flavor and fine tannins. The wine is then aged in a high proportion of new French oak barrels, which lends its creamy texture and refined spice notes while preserving the purity and richness of the fruit.
Food & Serving
Hosanna 2019 is a superb partner for refined, richly flavored dishes. Think roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, beef tenderloin with truffle jus, braised short ribs, or duck breast with a red wine reduction. It also pairs beautifully with earthy ingredients such as wild mushrooms, lentils, and black truffle, as well as aged hard cheeses like Comté or a well-matured cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatics and texture. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth helps the oak integrate and allows the fruit and spice notes to fully open; older bottles will require gentler and shorter decanting, primarily to remove sediment.
Producer
Château Hosanna is a jewel of Pomerol, part of the renowned portfolio of Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix, one of the most influential names on Bordeaux’s Right Bank. Created at the turn of the 21st century from some of the appellation’s most coveted parcels, Hosanna quickly established itself among Pomerol’s top estates thanks to its exceptional terroir on the plateau and meticulous, quality-driven viticulture. Under the stewardship of the Moueix family—also associated with icons such as La Fleur-Pétrus and Trotanoy—Hosanna has gained a reputation for producing dramatic, opulent yet ageworthy wines that express both the power and the silkiness that define great Pomerol. In strong vintages like 2019, it is often one of the standout wines in the entire Moueix portfolio.
