Description
Hosanna 2008 is a standout Pomerol from Bordeaux, crafted in a classic yet luxuriously opulent style. Often mentioned in the same breath as the acclaimed 2009 and 2010 vintages, this 2008 has earned a reputation as one of the true stars of the year. Dense, seductive and beautifully layered, it offers all the plush charm of great Right Bank Bordeaux with the structure to age gracefully.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Hosanna 2008 shows a deep plum to purple hue, still remarkably youthful for its age. The nose is intense and expressive, with waves of licorice, espresso, smoke and truffle, layered over ripe black plum, blackcurrant and boysenberry. Notes of forest floor, spring flowers and a touch of white chocolate add complexity and a sense of luxurious depth.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, concentrated and velvety, with a rich, almost glycerol texture. Layers of sweet, dark plum and black cherry unfold alongside cassis, cocoa and a savory undercurrent of earth and spice. The tannins are fine but firmly structured, suggesting that this wine still has more to give with additional time in bottle. While already highly enjoyable, it has the balance and freshness to continue drinking beautifully for another 15–20 years or more, especially from well-stored bottles.
Production
Château Hosanna lies on prime Pomerol terroir, rooted in a mosaic of gravel and clay soils over an iron-rich subsoil that is particularly well-suited to Merlot with a supporting portion of Cabernet Franc. Vines are typically low-yielding and carefully tended, with hand-harvesting ensuring only perfectly ripe bunches make it to the cellar. In keeping with top Right Bank practices, the grapes are sorted meticulously, then vinified in temperature-controlled vats to extract pure, polished fruit and refined tannins. The wine is traditionally aged in a high proportion of new French oak barrels, which adds texture, aromatic complexity and the ability to evolve gracefully over time without overwhelming the character of the fruit or the signature of the vineyard.
Food & Serving
Hosanna 2008 is a fine match for richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb with garlic and rosemary, beef tenderloin, braised short ribs, duck confit or game birds. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused dishes, mushroom-based recipes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both its aromatic complexity and silky texture. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended at this stage of its evolution to allow the wine to fully open and integrate, especially if enjoyed on the younger side of its drinking window.
Producer
Château Hosanna is one of Pomerol’s most exciting modern estates, part of the illustrious portfolio of Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix, the family behind icons such as Pétrus and La Fleur-Pétrus. Created at the turn of the millennium from vines on some of the appellation’s best gravel and clay parcels, Hosanna quickly established itself as a reference-point wine for lovers of plush, Merlot-based Bordeaux. Despite its relatively recent history as a standalone label, it has garnered significant critical acclaim and is now regarded as one of the top performers in Pomerol, consistently producing wines of depth, sensuality and long-term cellaring potential.
