Description

Heymann-Löwenstein Riesling Uhlen Blaufüsser Lay Großes Gewächs 2020 is a deeply expressive dry Riesling from one of the Mosel’s most dramatic steep-slope vineyards. Sourced from old, often ungrafted vines rooted in rare blue-grey slate, it captures the full tension, minerality and depth that define the best terroir-driven German Rieslings. As a VDP.Grosses Gewächs, it represents the estate’s top dry expression from this singular parcel in the famed Uhlen site.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Uhlen Blaufüsser Lay GG shows a pale to medium lemon-yellow hue with shimmering green highlights, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with layered aromas of ripe pear, yellow apple and mirabelle, followed by notes of citrus peel, white peach and subtle floral tones. Underneath lies a distinct slate-driven minerality, with hints of smoke, wet stone and a touch of herbal spice that grow more pronounced with air. On the palate, this is precise, powerful and finely etched, with a vibrant acid line wrapped around ripe stone and orchard fruit. Juicy yet tightly structured, it offers flavors of pear, quince, lemon zest and a touch of exotic fruit, all underpinned by a salty, stony backbone from the blue-grey Devonian slate. The texture is silky but firm, with a long, resonant finish marked by mineral grip and subtle smokiness. Built for aging, this Riesling will develop greater complexity, spice and honeyed nuances over 10–15 years or more, while already offering impressive depth and clarity in its youth.

Production
The Blaufüsser Lay parcel is part of the legendary Uhlen vineyard, straddling the steep terraces above Winningen and Kobern-Gondorf on the lower Terrassenmosel. Here, old Riesling vines—some up to 60 years of age and many ungrafted—are rooted in blue-grey Devonian slate rich in clay, a soil that lends both density and a characteristic smoky-mineral profile. The extreme slopes, with gradients up to 170%, demand painstaking handwork and strict hand-harvesting at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the grapes are gently pressed and the must is allowed to ferment spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. The wine is then matured in large 2,400-liter oak casks, without the addition of enzymes or fining agents, allowing the terroir to speak clearly through a patient, minimally interventionist approach.

Food & Serving
This powerful yet finely detailed Riesling pairs beautifully with refined, aromatic cuisine. Think butter-poached or grilled fish, scallops, lobster, or refined shellfish dishes; roast poultry with herbs; veal in light cream sauces; or sophisticated vegetable dishes featuring fennel, leek, asparagus or mushroom. Its mineral backbone and acidity also make it a superb partner for Asian-inspired dishes with ginger, citrus or subtle spice, as well as aged semi-hard cheeses. Serve at about 10–12°C to highlight both fruit and minerality. Young bottles benefit from 30–60 minutes in a decanter to open up the aromatics and soften the structure; older vintages can be served with a gentle splash to preserve their delicate tertiary notes.

Producer
Weingut Heymann-Löwenstein, a respected VDP estate, is one of the key modern pioneers of the Terrassenmosel. Based in Winningen, the family has long championed steep-slope viticulture and terroir-driven, dry Rieslings that express the nuances of slate, exposure and microclimate. Their work in sites like Uhlen helped redefine the prestige of the lower Mosel, demonstrating that these dramatic terraces can yield wines of profound depth, structure and longevity. Consistently highly regarded by international critics and collectors, Heymann-Löwenstein has become a benchmark for powerful, site-specific Mosel Rieslings and an essential reference for serious lovers of German wine.
