Description

Heymann-Löwenstein Riesling Röttgen Großes Gewächs 2019 is a powerful, dry Mosel Riesling from one of the region’s steepest and most dramatic vineyard sites. Sourced from the VDP.GROSSE LAGE Röttgen, this wine shows the muscular, baroque side of Mosel Riesling rather than the classic featherlight style. It’s a bottling for enthusiasts who appreciate depth, tension and a strong sense of place in their glass.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Röttgen GG typically shows a dense, bright lemon-gold color that hints at both ripeness and concentration. The nose is expressive and layered: ripe pear, yellow peach and apricot are underpinned by notes of acacia honey, crushed slate, flint and a distinctive salty, iodine-like minerality. Subtle herbal tones of coriander seed and cool mint lift the aromatics, giving freshness to the wine’s opulent fruit core. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, textural Riesling with an almost Burgundian creaminess and a hint of oiliness in its texture, counterbalanced by a firm, linear acidity. The ripe stone fruit and citrus are tightly interwoven with smoky, stony nuances and a deep, earthy-mineral backbone. The finish is long, structured and slightly tannic for a white wine, with a sense of coiled power that marks it as a serious, ageworthy Großes Gewächs. The 2019 vintage, with its concentrated fruit and vibrant acidity, should evolve beautifully for 10–15 years or more under proper cellaring, gaining complexity, spice and tertiary notes of honey and dried herbs over time.

Production
Röttgen is one of the warmest and steepest sites on the Lower Mosel, just above the village of Winningen, with dramatic terraced vineyards on near-vertical slopes of weathered slate, quartzite and rocky scree that store heat and emphasize extreme minerality. Heymann-Löwenstein works these vineyards almost entirely by hand due to the incline, with low yields and careful, selective harvesting to pick physiologically ripe grapes with excellent acidity. In the cellar, the must is typically gently pressed and allowed a slow, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, often in large, old wooden casks, to preserve site character rather than impose strong oak flavors. Extended lees contact adds texture and complexity, resulting in a dry (trocken) Großes Gewächs that clearly reflects its origin: dense, structured and deeply mineral.

Food & Serving
This wine’s combination of richness and piercing mineral acidity makes it an outstanding partner for sophisticated, flavorful dishes. Try it with roasted or poached turbot, halibut or monkfish, lobster with clarified butter, or scallops in a saffron or beurre blanc sauce. It also shines alongside richer poultry preparations (roast chicken with herbs, guinea fowl, veal in cream sauces) and refined Asian cuisine such as miso-glazed black cod, aromatic Thai dishes or Japanese kaiseki-style plates. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to balance freshness and aromatic expression. Decanting for 30–60 minutes when young is recommended to open up the bouquet and soften the wine’s initially firm structure.

Producer
Weingut Heymann-Löwenstein, based in Winningen on the Lower Mosel, is widely regarded as one of the leading estates in the region and a key force in redefining Mosel Riesling as a profoundly terroir-driven, dry wine. Founded and shaped by Reinhard Löwenstein, the estate has focused on meticulously farmed steep-slope vineyards and on expressing the nuances of different slate types and exposures. As a member of the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter), Heymann-Löwenstein has been instrumental in establishing the Großes Gewächs category on the Mosel, with single-vineyard bottlings like Röttgen and Uhlen regularly earning top scores and international recognition. The estate is celebrated for its uncompromising style: powerful, deeply mineral Rieslings that are built to age and that reflect their dramatic, slate-rich origins with striking clarity.
