Description
Henriet Bazin Champagne Meunier Blanc de Noirs Brut is a characterful grower Champagne crafted entirely from Pinot Meunier, sourced from a single, distinctive parcel known as “The Butter Path.” This south-facing vineyard on the slopes of the Ardre Valley rests on a rare limestone outcrop for Meunier, lending a striking finesse and mineral backbone to the wine. The result is a creamy, seductive interpretation of Meunier that showcases just how refined and gastronomic this often-underrated grape can be.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Blanc de Noirs shows a luminous, pale golden hue with a fine, persistent mousse and delicate streams of bubbles. The nose is expressive yet refined, weaving together ripe orchard fruits—pear, golden apple, and a touch of Mirabelle plum—with notes of citrus peel, white flowers, and fresh brioche. Subtle hints of chalk, hazelnut and a light creaminess sit in the background, signaling both the limestone terroir and careful aging on the lees.
On the palate, the Champagne is precise and elegant, with a creamy, almost caressing texture balanced by a clean, mineral-driven freshness. Flavors of baked pear, stone fruit and lemon curd are layered with pastry cream, almond and a faint saline edge that lengthens the finish. The dosage is kept in check, allowing the purity of Meunier and the tension from the limestone to shine through. Enjoy it now for its vibrant fruit and seductive texture, or cellar for 3–6 years to gain additional complexity, nuttiness and depth.
Production
The grapes for this cuvée come from a unique parcel called “The Butter Path” on the southern slope of the Ardre Valley in Champagne, where Meunier is rooted in an unusual limestone bank rather than the heavier soils typically associated with the variety. This chalk-rich terroir brings lift, precision and a distinctive mineral edge to the wine, complementing Meunier’s natural generosity. The fruit is harvested by hand to ensure optimal ripeness and selection, then gently pressed in whole clusters. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vessels to preserve aromatic purity, followed by extended aging on the lees to develop creaminess, complexity and fine bead. The wine is finished as a Brut, with a carefully judged dosage that underscores, rather than masks, the elegance of the terroir-driven Meunier.
Food & Serving
This Blanc de Meunier is a versatile gastronomic Champagne that pairs beautifully with refined yet flavorful dishes. Try it with shellfish—such as scallops, langoustines or lobster—lightly buttered fish, sushi and sashimi, or poultry in a cream or mushroom sauce. It also complements soft-ripened cheeses like Brie or Camembert and charcuterie with delicate seasonings. Serve well-chilled at 8–10°C (46–50°F) to highlight its freshness and fine bubbles. A short 15–20 minutes in the decanter, or simply opening the bottle a little before serving, will allow the wine to unfurl its full aromatic and textural range.
Producer
Henriet-Bazin is a family-run grower Champagne house rooted in the Montagne de Reims and surrounding valleys, where it has cultivated vines for generations. Known for championing estate-grown fruit and terroir-expressive cuvées, the domaine works primarily with Premier and Grand Cru sites and focuses on sustainable viticulture, careful parcel selection and low-yield farming. By vinifying its own grapes rather than relying on purchased fruit, Henriet-Bazin has earned a reputation among Champagne enthusiasts for precise, characterful wines that faithfully reflect their origins. Their Blanc de Meunier bottlings, such as this one, underscore the estate’s skill in elevating Meunier from a supporting variety to a star in its own right.
