Description
Henriet Bazin Champagne 1er Cru Blanc de Blancs Marie-Amélie Brut Nature Millésime 2015 is a precise, terroir-driven Champagne crafted entirely from Premier Cru Chardonnay. This rare vintage cuvée is only produced when the growing season offers exceptional conditions for the estate’s three oldest Chardonnay plots in Villers-Marmery. Unadorned by dosage (Brut Nature), it showcases the purest possible expression of chalky terroir, finesse, and concentration.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Marie-Amélie 2015 typically shows a luminous pale gold hue with fine, persistent bubbles forming a delicate mousse. The nose is refined and layered, opening with notes of lemon zest, white flowers, and crisp green apple, evolving into aromas of chalk, fresh almonds, brioche, and subtle stone fruit as it warms in the glass.
On the palate, this Blanc de Blancs is focused and linear at first, then broadens with air to reveal a creamy texture balanced by a vibrant, saline-driven acidity. Flavors of citrus, pear, and white peach are intertwined with hints of toasted hazelnut, pastry, and wet stone, giving a long, mineral finish that is both precise and complex. As a vintage Brut Nature from Premier Cru Chardonnay, it has excellent aging potential; well-stored bottles will continue to develop additional complexity, nutty notes, and honeyed depth over the next 5–10 years from vintage.
Production
Sourced exclusively from the Premier Cru village of Villers-Marmery on the Montagne de Reims, Marie-Amélie 2015 reflects a cool, chalk-dominant terroir famous for giving Chardonnay remarkable tension and elegance. The grapes come from three old-vine Chardonnay parcels, harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve both concentration and natural acidity. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and vinified with a clear focus on purity, often with careful temperature control and extended lees contact to build texture and complexity. As a vintage cuvée, the base wines come entirely from the 2015 harvest, and secondary fermentation in bottle is followed by prolonged aging on the lees before disgorgement, with no dosage added (Brut Nature) to allow the terroir and the character of the year to speak clearly.
Food & Serving
This Champagne pairs beautifully with refined, delicate dishes that mirror its precision and minerality: think oysters, scallop carpaccio, shellfish platters, ceviche, or simply prepared white fish with citrus and herbs. It also works wonderfully with sushi and sashimi, light poultry dishes, or goat’s and fresh cow’s milk cheeses. Serve well chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic detail. A brief decanting in a chilled carafe or allowing the wine to open in a large Champagne or white wine glass for 10–15 minutes will help unlock additional depth and nuance.
Producer
Henriet-Bazin is a family-run grower-producer based in the Montagne de Reims, with vineyards rooted in Premier and Grand Cru villages such as Villers-Marmery. For generations, the family has cultivated their own vines and produced Champagnes that emphasize terroir, low yields, and meticulous vineyard work. Known for their precise, characterful Blanc de Blancs from chalky slopes, they hold a respected place among Champagne’s artisan Récoltant-Manipulants. The Marie-Amélie cuvée, named as a symbolic personal element of the range, stands as one of their flagship expressions, showcasing both the pedigree of their old vines and their commitment to crafting complex, ageworthy Champagnes in limited quantities.
