Description

Henri Bonneau’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve des Célestins 2017 is one of the most sought-after wines in the Rhône, and a benchmark expression of old-vine Grenache. First released from the domaine in 1927, it has long been regarded as the estate’s greatest wine, crafted in tiny quantities and revered for its depth, complexity, and longevity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep garnet core with evolving ruby edges, hinting at both power and maturity. The nose is often expansive and layered, with dark cherries, ripe plum, dried herbs, garrigue, pepper, leather, and earthy spice, followed by subtle notes of fig, cocoa, and lifted floral accents. The palate is rich, velvety, and deeply concentrated, driven by ripe Grenache fruit, savory spice, and supple yet persistent tannins. Despite its generosity, the wine has remarkable structure and balance, with a long, haunting finish that can develop beautifully over many years. This is a wine with exceptional aging potential, often rewarding extended cellaring for decades.

Production
The wine comes from a very small domaine of around 6 hectares in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where Grenache dominates the old vineyards, supported by small amounts of Mourvèdre, Counoise, and Vaccarèse. Yields are extremely low, typically around 10–12 hl/ha, and harvesting is carried out very late to ensure complete ripeness. Fermentation takes place in cement tanks, after which the wine is aged in a combination of very old foudres and oak barrels for 3 to 5 years, or even longer in some vintages, with the final blend chosen only when the wine is considered ready.

Food & Serving
This is a wine that pairs beautifully with rich, flavorful dishes such as roasted lamb, game, beef stew, duck confit, and slow-cooked Provençal cuisine. It also works well with earthy mushroom dishes, truffled preparations, and aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for several hours if drinking young to allow the aromas and texture to open fully.

Producer
Henri Bonneau (1938–2016) was a 12th-generation grower and one of the true legends of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. He began making his own wine in 1956 and built a worldwide reputation for producing wines of extraordinary purity, character, and longevity from one of the region’s most traditional cellars. Today, his son Marcel continues the legacy, preserving the style and reputation that made Bonneau’s wines among the rarest and most coveted in the wine world.
