Description
Henri Bonneau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Marie Beurrier 2016 is a sought-after expression from one of the Rhône’s most legendary traditionalists. This cuvée is known for its seductive depth, effortless balance and ability to age gracefully, encapsulating the soulful side of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The 2016, vinified by Marcel Bonneau, has already drawn critical praise, including 91–93 points from Jeb Dunnuck, and is regarded as a particularly promising vintage in this historic cellar.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2016 Marie Beurrier shows a healthy, vivid purple-ruby hue that hints at both concentration and freshness. The nose is immediately evocative of the southern Rhône: wild garrigue, sun-warmed thyme, and lavender mingle with kirsch liqueur, black cherries and hints of cracked black pepper. Subtle notes of dried flowers, game, and a touch of smoked meat layer in with air, adding real aromatic complexity.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, yet wonderfully poised, with a charming, almost weightless texture. Ripe red and black berry fruit is framed by notes of licorice, sweet spice and a savory, wild edge, all lifted by lively acidity. The tannins are fine, ripe and chalk-dusted, providing structure without harshness. While already deeply enjoyable in its youth, the wine clearly has the stuffing to evolve; with proper cellaring, it should continue to develop more tertiary nuances—truffle, leather and dried herbs—over the next 10–20 years, depending on your preferences for maturity.
Production
Cuvée Marie Beurrier comes from select parcels within Châteauneuf-du-Pape, rooted in classic Rhône terroir of rolled galets (large river stones), clay and sand over limestone, which help retain heat and promote even ripening while preserving freshness. The blend is traditionally Grenache-led, often complemented by small amounts of other permitted varieties such as Mourvèdre and Syrah, sourced from old vines that naturally produce low yields and concentrated fruit. Harvesting is typically done by hand with strict selection in the vineyard and cellar. In keeping with the Bonneau family’s famously old-school approach, fermentation takes place in traditional vessels with minimal intervention, followed by extended aging in a mix of large old foudres and neutral barrels. This gentle, time-intensive élevage allows the wine to harmonize and develop its signature complexity without being marked by new oak.
Food & Serving
This Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes: think slow-braised lamb shank with rosemary, duck confit, venison stew, or a simple grilled ribeye with herbed butter. It also shines alongside hearty Provençal cuisine—daube de boeuf, cassoulet, or roasted root vegetables with wild mushrooms and thyme. Serve at around 16–18°C; if the bottle is young or recently opened, a gentle decant of 1–2 hours will help the aromatics unfurl and soften the edges of the tannins. For older bottles, decant more briefly and handle with care to preserve the wine’s developed bouquet.
Producer
Henri Bonneau is one of the most revered names in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a benchmark domaine for traditionally crafted southern Rhône reds. The family has been growing vines in the region for generations, but it was Henri who elevated the estate to near-mythical status through obsessive attention to detail, extremely low yields, and a staunch commitment to time-honored methods. Today, under the guidance of Marcel Bonneau, the domaine continues to uphold this legacy, producing wines that are both powerful and remarkably refined, with an almost Burgundian sense of texture and nuance. Cuvée Marie Beurrier, named after a family member, sits among their most coveted bottlings and is produced only in select vintages, making it a reference point for collectors and Rhône enthusiasts worldwide.
